Scale leather

Postby Grease » Tue Jan 03, 2006 12:45 pm

This is a great idea. Might as well get started.

I am looking for a design to make a peice of body armour out of leather with a scale design. Any suggestions for threading or something like that?

Check out this site: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Olympus/3505/page6.html. It shows a variety of different historical methods of assembling both scale and lamellar (which is quite similar to scale).

Plus, that site is just awesome.

you could also just go with the banded style, found on the above site, and have it be scallopped bands. this would allow you to have scale-looking armor with the mobility of segmentata. It would be put together by having a thin strip of leather rivetted at the top of each band to hold them together and allow them to "slip" past eachother.

It would end up looking like this, where the *'s are rivets.

there's a nice set of instructions for lacing the lamellar plates.
