Tools, Tips, and Techniques

I was thinking that it would be beneficial if we had a place to post little tips and tricks for other armoursmiths. What has worked well for you? What tools do you prefer? What would you suggest against? Product and technique reviews? etc etc.

Here are the tools i use on pretty much every leather project i've ever worked on, including those other than armour.
From Left to Right:
3 lbs. Rawhide Mallet: Great for hitting punches. heavy but won't damage the tools
1 lbs Poly Head Hammer: used in tooling
Tack Hammer: for setting rivets
Pungh Set: interchangable heads for multiple sizes.
Strap Cutter: a DEFINATE must have for your tool kit. be careful when cutting straps over 2 inches though. you can snap a blade if you aren't slow and steady.
Razor Knife, Tape Measure, and Latigo Lace (when needed)
I also use a Cutting Mat (orange) anda piece of 1/4 inch steel. place the steel under the mat for punching. also place the leather directly on the steel if you are going to do any tooling. it gives you a hard smooth surface to work on.

You would also want to include a straight edge and pens/pencils in your kit
That does it for a pretty basic leather working kit. most of the tools you can find either on Tandy.Com, or if you're lucky on Ebay.
