Yes, as long as it follows the rules.

You might try riveting plate to leather, or leather to cloth, as I've found that cloth to plate tends to result in a ripped mess of armor.

The Book of War wrote:3.7. Composite Armor
3.7.1. Studded, scaled, or brigandine Armor can only be counted as Armor if 2/3 of the target area is covered by metal or leather, or the studs/rings/plates can not be no more than 1/2 inch apart.
3.7.2. Composite Armor must be identifiable as Armor by appearance.

So yes, it would count, as long as you make it right. The plates (metal or leather) have to meet the appropriate armor standards that they normally would (3/16" leather, 20 gauge metal or better that's nondeformable and penny round), most of the area you're covering has to be covered in the armor-grade material, and the plates have to be relatively close together.

Good luck, and post a picture when you're done!

go to www.theringlord.com. They sell rings and stuff and there's a link to a simple lesson in chainmail making.

Another great stop for Chain info is http://www.mailleartisans.org/

They have something like 600 weaves not all historically accurate but still good info. They also have tutorials for doing round holes, armpit seams, etc. Great site!.

You could do plate on fabric if it was heavier... I imagine that a heavy grade canvas (think of a military duffel bag) with rivets would hold up pretty well.

No way in hell. One hole (such as one for a rivet) ruins the strength of nylon cloth. Even rip-stop needs to be sewn the right way to avoid ripping through.

Non-art canvas, or the heavy linen used in tents is the least that you'd need.

ummm...still no. That wouldn't work. Why do you think any kind of camper/climber gets really * and is always really careful about making sure there are no holes in their tents. This is because once the hole starts, it's really easy for it to get bigger. Now, if you have a whole bunch of wholes in this material and had metal plates hangin out of all of them, this piece of armor would fall apart before you could even wear it.

Also, where would you get a large supply of this material for low $$$? The only way I could think of is to rip it from one of the tents you speak of and that would cost way more money than it's worth.

Hot, heavy, rubbery armor, exactly what this sport has been missing. Or wait, no.

On a more productive note, if you use canvas or another heavy, looseweave cloth for a backing material, you can use a marlinspike: Image (the part on the right)
to punch holes in the cloth for rivetting without actually breaking the fibers so much, which'll make it much stronger and less likely to tear around the rivets.

ah... i didnt exactly factor in the exceeding sweat-factor in the stuff, on second though, canvas does seem like it would work better...
