Question about order of operations...

Postby S_e_r_g_e » Sun Feb 10, 2013 10:30 pm

Hi, I'm making my first piece of armor, and of course I'm doing something ridiculously tedious: a lamellar chestpiece. So I've spent hours looking up various opinions and tutorials on how to go about leatherwork. I've found many disciplines pertaining to how to shape, harden, dye, paint, tool, fasten, weather-protect, etc... but for what I'm doing I need specific advice because I've lost myself in the details...

I'd like to be able to do the following, but I'm not sure in what order or if possible in conjunction:

- tool each lame (simply)
- paint/dye each lame with 2 colors
- shape the overall rig to my body after everything is laced (assuming I designed the thing to my body's dimensions during consctruction)
- protect paint/dye against rain/sweat

I've read up on waxing process, but not sure if I can do that after I've colored it. Any suggestions on how to do all those things I want or if it's just a pipe dream?

p.s. my leather is already hard-ish (12-14oz saddle-skirting lthr)

Thanks,
Serge

For thick pieces like that, at the typical sizes of lamellar plates, you won't need hardening, really. If I were you, I'd do the tooling, then the dying, then the sealing, then the lacing. Laced up, the armour will naturally conform to your body to the necessary degree; that's one of the primary benefits of lamellar harnesses.

Good luck! Post pictures when you finish.

Thanks for the response. :) For the sealant process, should I use something purchased, or try wax-dipping? Sorry if I'm getting redundant...

I'd just use a product like http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/en-u ... 1-137.aspx or your favorite leather finish.

Thanks for the help so far. Another question... What's the best lacing to use for thick-leathered lamellar? I'd like to be able to use either black or red to offset the colors I'm dyeing with, so I'd like the lacing to be thick enough to be noticeable, yet strong enough to withstand the pressures from fighting without fraying or stretching too badly.

Leather lace or paracord should do it.
