Chain Mail - Galvanised or NonGalvanised

Postby Dawnbringer » Sat Sep 19, 2009 1:52 pm

So I've been thinking of making some Chain Mail and I went to a couple of sites to get instructions and most sites argued over wether to used Galvanised or Nongalvinised steel. I was just wondering what would be the best for Belegarth, and if it's just a preference thing then what are the pros and cons of each? Thanks

Galvanization in this sense is the process by which a metal is plated with zinc. Specific to galvanized steel, it's steel covered with zinc to prevent rust.

Go with either stainless steel or galvanized steel. You're going to have a * of a time with rust if you don't.

Some people think that non-galv mild steel chain looks better, but it does indeed require oiling. For regular home-made butted chain, I'd just go with galvy.

Non-galvanized and oiled looks more like actual medieval stuff.

If you're going to make it this way, though, it's better to make it using galvanized wire and then use an acid to strip it when it's done so you don't have to work with oiled wire or have it rust while you're working.

After it's done, if you use the right lubricant, it's not a big deal at all.
