Wire Cutters (For Chain)

Postby No'Vak » Sun Oct 04, 2009 9:58 pm

I was wondering what you guys use to cut the links off of the coils.

I use these but they take several tries to cut one link..

Noik, that's what I use for 12 ga. steel and it does the trick no problem, two links at a time. Well, actually, I use Weiss aviation snips, which are a whole 'nother world of quality better than those, but it's the same type of tool. Rest one arm of the snips against your thigh or hip and press sharply.

Hmm still no dice. They slip to the side of the coil when I close them all the way, and kind of bend the ring out a little bit.

I use bolt-cutters for cutting copper rivets and it works like a dream. Probably wouldn't have a problem cutting wire coils for your mail, either. The longer the handles, the better.

The jaws are opening and allowing the ring to sit between the two blades? Yeah, you just have cheap, crappy av-snips. Go buy some really nice ones and take a 4" long coil with you to the store to test them there before you buy 'em.

**** I just went out and bought a $14 pair of high tensile wire cutters from Rural King and I can cut through 6 links super fast so I'm set.

Those aviation snips are just crap. Mine anyways.
