is it worth it to buy a wholesale membership to tandy?

Postby kree » Fri Dec 04, 2009 4:43 am

i am looking to get a side of leather, that being said, should i buy a whole sale membership. I am also going to buy some rivets and dyes. so should i get one or not?

That being said, what sides should i buy, ive always got saddle skirting because most of it is 12-13 oz thick, in my opinion a perfect thickness, it does get a little thin in some places but 90% of my side was at least 12oz, ive not heard anything about the armor sides, so in summation i would like to know what leather to buy, where most people buy theirs, and what are the best dyes to use, im going to use dark green and black

what are the pro armorer smiths using?

It depends on how much you plan on spending over the upcoming year. Keep in mind the free Craftool with a Craftool purchase every month. Since most Craftools average around $6-$7, the wholesale membership can pay for itself right there--if you remember to take advantage of it every month. We've had ours since June and I know we've missed at least one month.

last suit of armor i made I bought it for a year and saved a lot on it.

Side of leather,
rivets (an asston)
dye
buckles
tools

everything you save on. I bought it day of and still saved something like 30 bucks with buying it. My armor used a TON of rivets though so it was quite a bit pricier then most for the sure amount of copper in it.

When I first went to Tandy last year, the saddle skirting we $150, the membership was $30, and the wholesale price was $120 (approximate numbers). So it would have almost paid for itself right there.

If you're buying anything there they will happily show you in the store what your price, post-discount, would have been to let you guage the benefit. If that helps at all.

For my armor, the wholesale paid for itself in the purchase of a side of leather alone. I bought the Select Import Saddle Skirting, by suggestion of many wise people here, for $80 with the pass. It would have been about $150 without it. In fact, it paid for itself with about $40 left to spare.

You want the spirit-based Feibring's dyes, NOT the Eco-Flow ones. And it doesn't hurt to buy a bag of their latigo strapping they have laying around in the store. It makes fair enough strapping and it's pre-cut and cheap.

I like my membership a lot and it did pay for itself the first day. Since that time I have probably saved hundreds of dollars. I also use the saddle skirting as it averages 3/16."

Saddle skirting is generally a good choice. It's larger and generally cheaper than the armor bends. The armor bends, however, are good too. They're thicker and a fair bit harder to work, however it's much more consistent leather and seems to be of a higher quality.

I can't gauge that against the 'upscale' saddle skirting though, I've never bought any of that.

I don't know what any of these people said, but yes. It's 30 bucks a year for full of win.

Worth it... Unless you don't need to buy it. Haven't bought leather yet, but my Tandy guy said to let him know I was with the SCA and he'd give me the discount price.

I'm not SCA and he knew that, but he'd never heard of Bel or Dag so he said to tell him SCA
