Attention ARMORSMITHS

Postby Geshtal » Wed Mar 03, 2010 8:05 pm

Hi guys ok I've been everywhere on the net looking for Female leather armor for my fiance and im having a hard time finding armor that doesnt "break the bank" for her. She is looking for just torso armor at this time and i was hoping some of you brave guys have tried your hand at making female armor. If you could post some of your work for female torso armor we'd appreciate it. And as a heads up we are looking to spend somewhere between 200-350 dollars for said armor. thanks for any responces and pics would be nice thank you all.

http://armoury.housemanticore.com/ is worth looking into. They are pretty reasonable, and make good stuff. It is where I've gotten my armor (greaves and bracers)

I am actually in the same position. I will be making my fiance a set of armor rather soon here, and ill post pics of what i come up with.

I have run through a couple different options, and due to the female anatomy...we are considering a scale, or chain torso which is flexible enough to work on curves.

Second option is a corset type armor with lady curves for kinetic protection so she doesn't get hit too hard. In all honesty we will probably end up going with a combination of the two.

NinjaBrig. Make a male set, but add a few rows in the front.
Although really, my go-to for all armor is ninjabrig....

Hello, I am Geshtal's fiance, the one looking to get some female armor lol. Well, we've looked at a bunch of different websites, like he said, and none have exactly what we're looking for. Most armor we come across is just made to look sexy and I'm not looking for something that shows my stomach off to everyone lol, that's a straight kill right there. I do want something that looks good. I'm ok with a bit of my chest showing. The corset idea sounded good, I'm not so hot about chain mail though. I will admit I have bigger breasts than most tiny petite girls and that's one of our problems.

Lamellar works for ladies, as does good, lightweight chain (i.e., Icefalcon maille).

If the severity of the curve is the issue, then i would recommend going with a molded leather corset type. The kicker here is that it has to be molded to you...its unlikely that you will be able to buy something off the shelf so to speak.

If you feel so inclined, Forkbeard has a bunch of tutorials and random advice on leather hardening scattered around on the forums, all of which i have used successfully i might add.

Basically however, to create the form your looking for, get a couple of ceramic bowls that are about the size your looking for, and use those to create a shape that is comfortable for you to wear. You will have to soak the leather...form it around the ceramic bowls, or you if you feel so inclined, though wet leather doesn't have a great feeling so i recommend the bowls. Then take the wet leather and bake it when it is stiff enough to move without losing the shape.

If you are going to make the entire corset piece out of one large piece of leather...you may want to just soak the part that is getting molded and use a hair dryer on it to make it keep it's shape. That way the rest of the leather will bend and move along with you rather than hamper your mobility.

I don't know that you can find someone to do custom work for the kind of money that your looking to spend...but if you have a friend who is good with leather, and in your local area, you could probably bribe him to do the piece as long as you picked up the materials. Just a thought.

This is not a reflection on you, but on ninja brig. I have nothing against people who use it...but its definitely not a well respected armor imo.

The only times when Ninja Brig should be used is...

  • You have almost no money.
  • You have almost no time to make real armor.
  • You need it done quickly, I.E. within a day or two.
  • You are minmaxing for weight.
  • You don't care about looking professional
  • You don't care about looking historical.
  • You want to look vaguely Asian without putting too much effort into it.
  • You want to look like an anime character.

Send me a pm. Im out o' work just now and making armor like a madman.
I'll need measure ments and good pics. Preferable revealing pics. Serfiously. The more I can see of you the better. I promise not to show anybody.
I'll need half the bread up front to get materials. I can bring the armor to Thaw Brawl.

Also, chances are she wants the armor to actually protect herself. Ninja Brig doesn't actually offer much defense for her female bits against solid sword shots.

Yea i saw that...its a nice example of pocket brig to be sure...but i like the garb better.

I don't like it as armor in general for all of the above reasons...I think it's fine that you use it...sort of like people who drive a Ford Pinto...Ok, its legit, and it may even be a really nice example of a Pinto...but its still a Ford Pinto * it. Doesn't matter how nicely you dress it up.

Had ninja brig torso, converted it to hip armor before fest. I absolutely love it. As for the arguments against it, Sir Peregrine had a great idea on how to make it look more historical. Start putting nickel plated rivets through the center of every square. I thought this was a great idea and would look fantastic. Havent gotten around to doing it yet

That would help make it look historical....but the problem is that it isn't.

I mean, you would have to make it look like this...for it to start being historical.

Image

Now don't get me wrong...its a legit armor...but the only real reason to make Ninja brig is that its easy...light...and fast. That's what its for...and that's fine if your just starting out, but if you have been doing this for a few years? dude...spend 30 bucks and make yourself a chain shirt or something. It's not even hard...it just takes time.

Now if you couldn't give a crap about making it historical, and you want the absolute minimum armor that conveys an advantage...ok that's a whole other story, and its fine...but be up front about it. Don't lie to me and tell me that you think its actual historical or something. Just say...yea i don't care about history. I just want the armor bonus.

I'm not saying that's you specifically...there are lots of people who just don't know that its not historical, or don't have the time to make something nicer, and that's fine, but you and i both know that there are lots of people who simply don't care and just want the bonus. And as a result, you will get ripped on for using it long term.

I agree its not historical, and I am in no way defending that ninja brig was historical. But my opinion is that in a sport thats based only barely on historical accuracy Id rather spend the 30 bucks and 4 days it took me to make my brig than a hundred or so to make real leather or spend the months of time to make chain

As a chick I can say that I've always found standard corset armor too constricting. just fyi.

Rocca has a pretty good chick armor design and we're working on a floated articulation waist cincher type thing (real specific i know. lol) to see if we can't work out something that is attractive AND mobile. we'll keep you posted. Your may want to take a look at Rocca's design.. I think its somewhere in this thread. or pm her.

good luck! :)

I finally talked mine into an articulated corset. Sort of like a roman lorica, which in theory should give her the mobility. the strips over the abs and lower chest will be untreated...and ill harden at least part of the chest plate which will protect all the important parts from solid hits.

The rest will be ether chain or scale armor. maybe a combination of both.

In its most basic form, it's small leather squares sewn into little pockets of cloth:

There are variations on plate size, fabrics, etc. of course.

There was a gentlemen from forodwraith that had a pocket brig chest piece with rivets through each piece of leather. He posted pics some time ago.

It looked great, and original considering it was ninja brig that is a big plus, theres just too many * imitations.

I Wear a leather armor grade corset all the time...i LOVE my corsets. They protect me from hits and I can still move and breathe in them. I made them myself, Soaked the leather and shaped it to me personally, Rumbeard loved that part. Depending on how I'm feeling they can either be loose or tight on me and either way they fit just fine and still hold the babies in place. I too am big breasted, so forming leather to the boobies isn't impossible.
