Leaf armor (Scale)

Postby Edirkan » Tue Apr 27, 2010 10:32 am

Thinking about making a leaf shirt, are there any issues with this other than 3.1.8 and 3.7? And if so, what else do I need to be wary of?

It'll probably be easier for you to make the scales out of leather, rather than metal, to make it legal.

Thing is I have access to a free supply of stainless steel scales from a friends father, and so long as they follow 3.1.8 and 3.7 there should be no issues is what I've read. If there are any catching points in the rules regarding this is what i'm trying to avoid in the crafting of said item.

As long as they pass the penny test, and they're not an entangling hazard, there shouldn't be a problem with them.

Anyone else have any advice that I'm missing on this one?

It'll probably fail for being a weapon grater. A rising shot on most scale will destroy foam.

I plan on constructing this with as little lift capability as humanly possible, in an attempt to eliminate said issue. Also on that note, isn't that something of the point of not only 3.1.8, but also your weapon cover? I'd like to think that by not only sufficiently rounding your edges and keeping lift to said minimums, that the weapon cover would provide more than ample protection for your weapons.

Yea, i was under the impression that that's why we cover our weapons with cloth...

Not that scales couldn't cut through it, but as long as they have less cutting ability than the edge of a penny...i fail to see what the issue is according to the rules.

There's another thread around here with scale mail and more people were concerned about it being a grater against human skin during a grapple, than they were for weapons.

IMO, make a small segment with a couple lines and let your vets check it. They'll let you know if it passes and give you tips.

Out of curiosity, to prevent lift like you were talking about, are you planning to rivet the bottoms, sew them, or glue them down to the leather backing?

As for local vets...I am the most experienced player in the area (outhro excepted) so I'm trying to take all safety issues into account., Grappling is something I fight without, and while I can BE grappled, I generally try to prevent such occurrences from happening, also why 3.1.8 exists. As for the lift issue, I've got a few ideas in mind, but I need to actually get a hold of the scales, my foremost idea is to secure the the scales to the base near the top and where the scale would be hidden by the one above it, leaving little flex option. Also plan on avoiding issues in the shoulder area by using rigid pauldrons instead of full scales. Sleeves seem to be one of my sticking points, but we've got help from a local metallurgist (same person providing the scales).

I want to see picts when you are done. I think scale is awesome looking, if you can make it metal and safe, that would be sweet.

But of course, I'll also provide something of a mini series on this thread as the vest is being built, complete with detailed instructions.

A calendar of seasons has come and gone since this post and as my curiousity peaks as to the manufacture of your vest.
I'm interested in accessorizing a cuirass with scale mail from http://theringlord.com/cart/shopdisplay ... l+Supplies
as I noted that the SCA has approved the replica portion.
Anyway any pics ya can provide would be awesomeness.
We fight in Bel and LVRA so having armorment that is safety functional for both is a bonus.

similar idea to armor being considered
