Maille question

Postby Svartroxi Angismar » Sat May 29, 2010 9:40 pm

I realize that the rules state that maille needs to be made of 'period' materials and normally I wouldn't bother asking, but I was wondering if one where to do an inlay on the armor in question, would it have to be in period as well.

As for specifics, I plan on making a maille vest out of 14 ga. (AWG) 1/4 in. galvy rings, and was planning on doing an inlay of the HoRdE symbol on the chest. I am hoping to do the inlay in either Dark Rose or Green Anodized Niobium as soon as I figure out whether or not those rings would be strong enough to last as actual armor. If it isn't then in order to do it in color I have to go with Anodized Titanium which I am sure is strong enough, but is lighter.

As far as using said piece of armor as armor in the sport would that kind of thing be allowed, as the majority of the armor would be in period materials? If not, could someone tell me whether bronze, brass, or copper would be a better pick for me for strength and color sticking out from the galvy?

Well, I suppose technically it would be illegal to use a non period material. It's really going to come down to the individual weapons checker to decide. If it's not significant (i.e. doesn't cover like 40% of the front of your chest), it might be passable.

Sorry it's not a concrete answer, but unfortunately there really isn't one.

im with derian on this one. if it comes to it the emblem could just be counted as garb and you cant call armor if hit there. it would be like you have a decorative hole in your chain shirt

Unless I royally botched my mathing, then the inlay should be about 16 in x 8 and a bit in.

If the inlay is the only thing between your chest and the sword, then it wouldn't be armor.

if its a solid inlay, put it over top the passing rings, if its not a solid inlay, and your inlaying a different color ring into it...then just double up on the rings. Make the shirt out of the legal rings, and then add the inlay rings to it till you have the pattern you want. its completely legal that way and you get your pattern.

Hey ox, have you uh been barreled into horde yet, cuz uh if not that's a big no no on the unit symbol on armor or for that matter anything, and I'd hate to see ya out a lot of time into armor that you shouldn't wear. It's bad juju to wear a units symbol if you haven't been barreled in yet. If your feral aka petitioning horde, that's cool and all but you still can't sport the horde symbol until your blooded in. Just trying to save you some time and headaches and kidney punches.

I'm barreling at this coming Chaos (at least thats what I've been told), and I really doubt I'll even have the steel rings cut (need about 19k of them and I'm slow at making them) by then, unless I can get my rig set up some time soon and as it turns out I did botch my math royally, so I'm just turning it into a banner and just using anodized aluminum, because it's cheaper.

One day I may figure out the maths to this program and make my armor, but that can wait until my new job gets going and then I can make one out of better materials.

if your going to use 14 gauge for maile then wind it at 3/8" diameter rod, 1/4" would be really tight and hard to weave

It's not to bad, the AR is still about 4.2 - 4.3 with springback and as I'm not planning on having any joints in it if this thing is still workable as armor with the size I ended up turning it into the flexibility or lack there of won't really be a problem. Besides 3/8th ID is too loose for an inlay in my honest opinion.

Kadis, what do you mean by solid inlay or not? Here is the rendering of it if that will explain it.

Guts, this one's cool. He's not barrelled in yet, but I hear nothing but good things from the western horde.
