Leather covered sporting helmet concept?

Postby LoganSteele » Tue Jun 01, 2010 12:11 pm

Hello armor smiths. I thank you for your time in reading my post. I am what I consider a new player and am coming close to my first year of experience in this great sport. I have some experience in foamsmithing now but none in armor making. It appears to me first step in protection should be a cup and then a helmet. My question involves the helmet.

I would like a helmet that protects against the blunt trauma of an accidental head shot (ear guards and face guards would be nice) but also maintains the look of a leather helmet. My thoughts were perhaps to get a helmet like a Lacrosse helmet like http://www.cascadelacrosse.com/ and have it covered over in leather. It seems to me many of the leather helms I see folks wearing would do little to protect from a strong head shot though they look cool and give the armor bonuses (am I mistaken?). That said here are my questions.

All my questions were answered and now i am seeking anyone in the southern California area willing to meet with me sometime in the next couple months to take a commission to make me a helm that offers decent looks and real protection as well as passing the armor rules. Please pm me if you are interested and maybe we can set up a viewing of your products.

Actually the leather helms you see offer profound amounts of protection to the head...they are modeled after true helms way back forever ago. Now the only question as to wether or not to add leather to a helmet would be do you have a medical condition that requires you to wear one? I have a member in my realm that had brain surgery 1 1/2 years ago, he cannot take a hit to the back of his head.

Yes covering a helmet with leather is legal and it gets you the arrow protection unless there is no face guard, you get shot in the face with no guard you are dead. Otherwise there is no additional hit points to a helm, head shots are illegal. It just helps with the pain.

You could do it, but it will look horrible.
You do not need that much head protection. No one does.
If you make a hardend leather spangenhelm and a suspention liner, you will be safer than you would be with some lame lacrosse helm with leather glued to it. And it will look hisorticly right.
You could buy a steel norman helm. Usually these are the spangenhelm type but only cover half your head. Make cheek plates and a back plate out of leather and put a suspention liner in it.
Goto the armour archive.org and do reasearch on non SCA helmets. Living history guys will be your freinds for this.
This is all based on the idea that you need some kind of real helmet for protection. You don't.
You could easily butch up and wear an arrow mask like everybody else.

Excellent advice as always thank you. I think on this one i may look to purchase one from someone with experiance. I have taken head shots and they didnt hurt however i would prefer not to recieve a broken nose or messed up teeth if i can avoid it. The arrow head shot immunity is a sweet bonus too. I shall look further on these boards and find someone who might be willing to craft me a nice helm. I have several foam swords to make for now for people as well as a loaner pile for my realm to finish up so im gonna be a bit busy to take on a new skill.

No medical needs here but it seems a logical first step in safety equip. to me.

Arrow mask....excellent. Ill look into those.

Rumbeard's helm saved him from worsening his concussion he got last year at Yestare with a red to the face..twice.

The helmet in my picture wears like a footbatt helmet. It has saved my face a number of times.
BUT, wearing a helmet seems to make people mistake my leather covered face for my leather covered shoulder. I take way more headshots when I'm wearing it than when I'm not.
I could make you whatever kind of helmet you want. Pm me.

most of the leather helms you see are also padded with foam to make them fit better and that also absorbs alot of the impact from a headshot. headshots affect me alot less when i wearing my helmet than when im not.
my helmet was also made by forkbeard ;)
