legality?

Postby Thumbs » Wed Jun 16, 2010 7:32 pm

ok i'm looking at two armor things here that i had questions about. first of all these pauldrons http://www.schmitthenner.com/images/PICT3268.JPG would those be legal? or would the sticky uppy part be in violation of the rules?
Next i'm wondering about these http://www.schmitthenner.com/VambrGau.JPG I'll probably go with Bracers without the over the hand bit and some gloves. but i like the look of these. was wondering if they're A-legal (i don't see why they wouldn't be, but seems worth checking) and B- Worth it.

They look legal if they meet thickness, is it me or is there a huge noob resurgence?

Lots of conventions lately... School also got out, kids (the good ole' fashioned ones) are looking for outside activities still... for the moment.

They appear legal; however, I would much rather make my own or support some skilled Bel fighters via commissions. While you wait on the commissions, get used to fighting without them... learn to take/recognise a sufficient hit before adding a new factor into the mix.

I don't even count armor at practice, I don't want to train my mind to rely on it. I do wear it for practice, however, so I'm used to moving in it.

Assuming they meet the thickness requirements, yes, they're probably both legal.

Noik I'm not a * Noob. I've been playing since i was 14 years old. and at best I've only ever had some arm bracers for armor, and I rarely used those. However now that I'm reentering the game after a period of downtime I'm wanting to maybe get some supplies.

The Pauldrons are totally legal, they are the same ones I have Thumbs. I just bought mine when they were a lot cheaper. The bracers would prolly pass to, his stuff is great except it's highly overpriced now. If you want to make the pauldrons you can look at mine and use them as a pattern. I would suggest the bracers and gloves deal, instead of those things. I think you'll be happier being able to wear gloves+bracer, or one or the other. With those you are stuck with all or nothin.

It's often good etiquette to decide if advice is needed, wanted, or even useful to the listener before delivering it in a condescending manner.

But I'm just not sure how to make this post and follow my own advice.

No disrespect meant to your favorite leatherworker, Black Cat, but it's a free country. This guy knows what he wants to do, and just wants to make sure it's not against the rules. I don't want to overstate the point... but when's the last time someone questioned you on why you didn't buy shoes from the maker THEY chose?

I was genuinely trying to not come across as condescending. I really didn't mean any disrespect but still feel it's awkward to make someone explain why he's rejecting the craftsmanship of someone who had nothing to do with the product he wanted.

I posted that a little too hastily. What I really meant is why not look into having Forkbeard make your pauldrons and bracers. Or maybe look around for other armor makers, both on the Belegarth boards and on Armour Archive. Schmitthenner isn't the only talented leatherworker out there.

I'm not telling you or Thumbs to not go with Schmitthenner, just to look at what Forkbeard, other Belegrim/Belegarthian (not sure which term is correct) armor makers, or SCA armor makers can offer before making a final decision.

I posted this before i saw Forkbeard's stuff. its something I'm going to look into now. Also going to try out making my own stuff, I found some patterns I can use as Bracers, or go with what Soo pointed out.
Luckily I live in Montana. Leather shops are EVERYWHERE.
Though I may still go with the Pauldrons, I really like the Appearence

I'll bring one of my pauldrons out on Sunday Thumbs, if you want to borrow it for a week or two to get a pattern going you can. I'll just need it back before CW.

Shop, shop, shop for your leeather. Right now Tandy does NOT have armor grade leather on sale, but they DO put it on sale every couple months. With many leather stores, you can probly find a deal. I don't pay more than $100 for a side of armor grade leather. If it's more than that, I wait to buy.
Armor grade is 3/16". That = 12oz leather. It is usually veg-tan, although you can get soft leather from elk or moose that is thick enough, but it will never harden.

I know you've already decided to at least look at people who are fighting and able to make armor, but here IMO are the good reasons for fighters to do so:
1. If you get armor from someone who fights like we do you are more likely to get armor that will allow you to be able to move correctly.
2. They can fit it to you, right there, while some guy on the internet might know how most people your size are built a slight difference in that can make a HUGE difference in how it feels after a few fights.
3. It's cheaper.
4. They might be able to help you learn how to do it yourself, guys who are just selling it are doing just that, just selling it, while a lot of fighters (not all) would love to help grow our community through teaching people how to make better garb, better weapons, and even better armor.

That is all....
