First leather project!: Floating articulated pauldrons!

Postby Acorn » Mon Jun 28, 2010 8:43 pm

Rocca and I are each making a floating articulated pauldron for our sword arms for Chaos! This is my first time working with leather. Rocca had made some armor before so basically she tells me what to do and I do it. I'm really excited and so far it's going great. We're going to take pictures as we go. If you have any suggestions please let us know!

We made the pattern ourselves. It is loosely based off of the pattern from armorgeek.com.

Image
Image

So far we have cut all the pieces out and bevelled the edges and put a rim around them. We are still working on designs to emboss or carve in. Not sure which yet. I am hoping to do some celtic knot work. Which technique is more ideal for that or does it matter?

Image

I have a acorn stamp I'd want to use as an accent and we tested it. Pretty sweet huh?

Image

PS. We did not realize we were wearing the same clothes until we started taking pictures.

Swivel knife, backgrounder, and beveler, the three tools that are most used in armorsmithing...

Armorgeek, eh? Honestly, I'd be much more supportive of a site that (used to) offer free armoring patterns, but their projects are so... simple. I'm pretty sure one can just look at the thing and know what pattern they used.
They also have updated only once in the past six months, and now they charge for the patterns. No thanks- if I need help patterning, and if one of my armoring notebooks can't help me, then I'll just go to the Armor Archive.

Nice job, ladies! We should drive up to your neck of the woods sometime and rumble (and buy a few piranha)! Are you planning on wearing more armor?

the pattern was pretty simple, hence Rocca saying, lets make these rounded and pointy and floating articulated. silly armor smith.

Rocca has a molded leather and lamellar breat plate already that we're modifying and I am hopefully trying out a new design with panels. sort of modeled after a corset but with movement. i refuse to make quintessential sexy girl armor that can't move. we're fighting god damnit! so yes, we plan to have torso pieces to go with it.

we're currently in the process of tooling designs onto our stuff. oh man. that is waaaayyyy more difficult than i thought it would be. more pics soon.

Looks like you're on the right track. My only question would be, how your gonna strap it? I've only ever done pauldrons like this, in pairs that were to be attached to a breastplate. I've really been wanting to do a single pauldron like this, ever since I got access to a TLF employee discount, lol.

Pauldrons are usually attached one of three ways:

Breastplate
Gorget
Cross body straps

My guess is #3.

The only thing I have noticed with crossbody straps is that they tend to rip tunics under the arm area.

we're doing cross body straps.

ideally they could also strap on to our armor too so we can wear them with or without our breastplates

Use chicago screws instead of rivets to attach them then. That way they'll be removable. You can even use a bit of the non-permanent Loc-tite if you have problems with them coming loose.

take an old metal fork, cut a middle tine off. use it as a spacer between the leather. then when you finish peening the rivet, remove the fork. your rivet will allow the leather to move freely and still have a decent peen.

So we finished tooling them and here's what they look like:

Mine is still wet since we only have one set of tools so had to take turns. They are both shield knots; mine celtic (obviously) and Rocca's Norse.

We also just dyed them and are going to mold them tonight. more pics soon.

It's called a camouflage stamp and it looks like a scallop shell. It's often used to makes leaves and scrolls look rounder, or as an edge decoration. There is actually a stamp specifically for edging that looks exactly like it but it a set rather then one "scallop." Our stamp came in a basic leather tooling kit that had a beveller, backgrounder, etc.

Woo hoo! We are almost done!

Here is the inside of with the floating articulation. I misplaced my metal cutters so we haven't cut the rivets so they don't lay flat yet and are still long but what evs.

And this is what the outside looks like:

All we have left is to put the straps on and cut the rivets down and we're done! :)

It looks like I'm too late, but...

Word of advice: with good copper rivets, put the peened side out, not in. This doesn't look quite as smooth, but it prevents the peened head from abrading away tunics, skin and anything else you might have underneath the armor.

Its never too late to remove rivets... especially if they havent been peened, or even if they have, introduce it to your good friend mr Dremel.

Bort, doesn't leaving the peened bits on the outside leave them free to **** up anybody who bumps into your armor during a grapple? Just put 'em on the inside and wear a good tunic.

Not if you're not terrible at peening.

haha. peen.

<--- maturity of a 12 year old boy.

so i probably won't replace the rivets because i'm lazy and going to run out and have to buy more if i do, so hopefully i'll be able to make them fairly flat.

I'm going to have to have you show me the best way to peen when I start making my suit :)

And did anyone else notice they're both wearing the same shirts again??

Happy to.

For everyone else though, the trick is to just take your time and make sure you're not half assing it, like everything else in life. It's going to take more than one or two whacks, so be prepared. A lightish-weight ballpeen (funny how that works, eh? :)) works great, though a lightish-weight claw hammer will work fine too. Some people use a two or three pound sledge, but I'm not really a fan of this method as you lose most of your control and have much more potential to **** up the leather.

Work your way around the circumference of the post with the hammer so that you're peening the edges down. When you think it's good, run your finger tips over the surface of the post from different angles. If you feel any sharpness (you probably will, especially after your first pass), that's a sign you need to peen more there.

Just keep working at it and you can get them very smooth. Having an anvil or some other very solid surface below it is pretty much a necessity for well peened rivets.

Oh a proper peen is important, but it's a difference of who the rivet is more constantly in contact with: You grapple with someone, it's over in a minute. The rivet will be pointing at you all the rest of the time, every second of fighting, hanging out, walking to and from the field, etc. Do the math ;) I don't love sewing that much, I like to make my linens last as long as possible.

Yeah but one has a ponytail where the other doesn't so it's not quite the same. :P

Derian, what would you suggest to those without an anvil?

Tandy carries a nice marble block that has been polished nicely and is big and heavy enough to act as an anvil for your purposes. I personally use that for peening. So much so that i was built as a gift, a nice table with a spot for the marble block so it won't shift around. Its probably the most useful thing on earth.

Buy one.

Kade's suggestion will work, but those marble slabs are pricy and not designed for that purpose. Tandy has a mini anvil for $10, and it makes all the difference in the world.

If you plan on doing more than basic leather work, it would probably be a good idea to pick up a larger anvil as that one is tiny. These too, can be found very cheaply. Harbor Freight has one for $40, or you can search eBay for pieces of railroad that can work well for an anvil. You can usually find them for $20 or so.

I use a 25 lb table vice that has an anvil tongue and block on the back end of it- picked it up at a street fair for 20$. The vice part is actually immensely helpful, since a lot of what I do uses steel 3/8" thick rivets that are simply too much to cut to size by hand.

I was even able to use a piece of sharpened re-bar, a drill bit, and a lot of oil to drill in little rivet setters for round head rivets.

Nice work, ladies! I can't wait to red hit through them at Chaos! What are you planning for breastplates?

* copper rivets. Just sayin'.

Thanks for the anvil link, Derian! I'm looking for cheap alternatives for a 500$, 600 lb armoring anvil for some upcoming forging work~

I can't speak to the quality of the Harbor Freight anvils, so don't take it as an endorsement! Really though, it's not like it would be an expensive investment.

I would seriously consider pieces of railroad, too. Arioch recommended them to me and suggested that if I could get my hands on a piece and a plasma cutter, cutting out four or five inches of the center piece on one side makes it much more versatile as you can fit pieces over it while riveting.

You can't red them if we kill you first! ;)

As far as breast plates go, I am in the midst of redoing my armor, which I posted in an earlier thread last year. Its a molded leather breast plate that I originally combined with lamellar, but I'm planning on taking out the lamellar and replacing it with articulated straps. Acorn is attempting to make a corset/bodice type piece that will mimic the bodice type feel while still allowing for movement.

Basically, Acorn and I think that 99.9% or female armor is crap and are trying to make better basic designs that can function for female shapes.

All of Forkbeards peens are on the outside if I remember correctly, and there's never been an issue with the rivits. He stuff passes regularly at all the events we attend.
