Fur Armor

Postby Bear » Mon Aug 02, 2010 2:05 pm

I am new to armor smithing and I want to make a pair of fur bracers. My question is, would it be best to make a pair of leather bracers to armor spec and then attach the fur on top? If so, what would be the best way to go about attaching the fur to the leather?

I would start with the armor grade bracers first and as far as attaching the fur...do you want metal showing or not...if you do want to see metal use rivets...if not...DAP...you can even sew it on for a stitched look.

To play devils advocate- as a Herald/ Marshall I would want to be able to clearly see the armour for it to count. Esle- you could make fur bracers and not count as armour.

I do remember someone making leather ones and then the fur was on the inside for comfort and it was around the edges- looked good.

I hope that helps...

You need to use leather that is plainly thick enough to be armor. And fake fur that has a light enough base to not interfere with inspection.
The shoulder on my new armor is like this. I just poked holes around the edges of the leather piece and sewed the fur to it. There are a couple small holes in the edge of the fur where you can see the leather thickness plainly.
Just make it look like armor and you'll be fine.

While on the topic of fur and armor I also wanted to construct an armor grade vest out of fur with squares of leather stitched into the inside of the vest. I was wondering if this would be legal because you wouldn't be able to see the armor stitched onto the inside and as Satanaka said, they wouldn't pass it if its not clearly visible. I did not see anything in the armor rules posting about the visibility of the piece being armor so I am not quite sure if it is required that the leather be seen but I wanted to check with you guys before I put the time, money and effort into it and not have it pass as armor.

I think the vest is a stretch. Bracers might be identifiable as armor, but something like you've described is probably not. Here's the relevant rule:

3.3.5. The presence of Armor must be easily discernable to count as Armor.

Thank you for quoting the rule, I must have missed it.

I figured that because the vest would be all fur it would be assumed that underneath it would be the skin of an animal, leather, and with the bracers and leg pieces being armor grade it could be assumed that the chest piece was also armor grade. If not, I will still probably make the vest but it wouldn't be armor grade.

If your going to do armor with fur, try thinking about it differently. Don't build a vest out of fur and then add armor to it...build your armor and then add fur to it where appropriate.

Here are some interesting ways to add fur to armor. Ignore the armor it's self and look at how the fur is incorporated into the piece instead.

if the armor appeared to be rigid enough (like Forkbeard's shoulder armor), could that still count as "being easily discernible as armor"

I mean a breast plate moves in a very distinct way. Regardless of the material covering it.

Fur bearing animals don't have thick leather skin, so it would never, nor did it ever, serve as legitimate, functional armor against metal or even stone weapons.

There's an argument to be made about layered raw hide (cow, horse, etc and not fur bearing animals btw) but then you're dealing with thick leather along the lines of the BoW rules.

Read the Book of War another three or four times. It'll explain all of this.

You can only stack two layers of leather to reach thickness for armor grade.

Caleidah is totally on the money. There's nothing wrong with not understanding the rules or being confused if the rules are unclear, but many of these questions are clearly spelled out 100% in the Book of War.

Read through it a couple times and it will answer 90% of the questions you have.

Though I don't see why you couldn't put a layer of fur-covered leather/skin over the top of a fully legal cowhide to meet the requirements.

Especially since it is considered legal according to the BoW to cover and bind together legal-thickness leather with cloth. Aka. "Ninja Brigandine".

Gotta be easily discernible as armor.

3.3.5. The presence of Armor must be easily discernable to count as Armor.

By the way, spelling error on that rule. Its bolded.

make you armor parts from hard leather, glue/sew fake fur over them tightly.
still looks like armor, just hairy.
This works well and is legal. Ive done it and it passes everwhere.

Here's my take on that. If ninja brig is considered "easily discernable" as armor, even though it generally looks like quilted cloth. Then armor grade leather with some fur over it should be just as "easily discernable" as armor.

That's my devil's advocate to the devil's advocate.

Absolutely, Soo.
Furthermore, say I took a hard leather elbow cop. Totaly unmistakable as armor. Now I glue fake fur tightly down on it. It is still a hard, elbow cop shaped object that is absolutely identifiable as an armor piece.
Who said we can't have furry armor again? because that guy is dumb.

Most ninja brig is pretty discernible as armor... I don't know how blind you are, but its pretty obvious what it is when you see it.

Ninja "brig" is disernable as cloth with quilted squares. It looks nothing like armor, but somewhat like the padding some people wear under it.
It is recognizable as something heralds accept as armor in this game, though.
