No, composite armor isn't required to have a certain thickness of leather or even be leather for that matter. Cloth is acceptable too.

Buy rivets of studs intended for leatherworking and then attach them by whatever method is used for that particular type of rivet or stud. Typically, it involves putting a hole in the leather or using an awl to open a hole between threads in cloth, sticking part of the rivet/stud through, then either capping or burring the other end and hitting it with a hammer or just plain hitting it with a hammer, possibly including a specialized tool.

Wait...im sorry, did you just say that he can go to a leather shop, pick up a couple bags of $5 rivets, poke lots of holes into cloth, and make passing armor?

Sure! If he's willing to poke ~1500 holes in a vest and rivet ~1500 rivets (which will cost more than a side of leather), he can have composite armor, yes.

Read the rules.

It was more a commentary on the sadness of the legality of this armor than an ignorance of the rules, but thanks.

It's not sad that this kind of armor is legal. I't the bottom of the barrel, yes, but it still has a place.
When it's done right, it looks cool. Looking cool adds to feild. It make good pictures and attracts more people.

Also, like Arrakis said, it's almost always going to be significantly more money and time invested than any other form of armor. There's a reason you almost never see armor like this.

If I ever get the cash I'm so going to do this...8-10oz leather, nice domed rivits...

That would be a fancy breast plate :)

Any kind of sttel in fine, no matter the plating.
Galvinized is cool, too, but ugly.
Right now Tandy leather is discontinuing dome studs altoghther. They are $35 per 1000. That's rought 60% off. If you want studded armor, nows the time, folks.
I'm going to try to buy some just to make pretty light stuff for the wife.
