first piece of armor!

It's a bracer that I kind of threw together at my grandma's house. She has a ton of leather-working miscellany, and just this one 30 inch strip of armor-grade. So I cut it into three, punched a few holes, and this is what I got. It looks like hell, I know. It's got that "I made this myself with the scraps I pulled off a corpse" look. I kinda like it, but that may just be because it's my first one.

Your corpse-grade armor looks good to me. :) Heck, I'm saving up old leather shoes for my first set of bracers....

Yeah, the more I look at it, the more certain I am that I love it. With a couple of small changes, like tapering the thing so it's even all down my arm, I'm thinking I'm gonna make whole bracer/greaves set this way. Maybe get some leather scraps that don't quite match next time, so it looks really hacked together.

Can you show a pic of you wearing it?

Also, it'll look a little better if you either dye it or do some tooling on it. Maybe trim the ends of the strips so they line up with each other?

I'm also generally a fan of leather stitching, but I've decided (on my own work at least) that it looks increasingly better the closer together and tighter I make the stitches.

Well done on deciding to do it yourself, though. Now, when you acquire larger pieces, you'll be ready to accomplish more. Just have a plan, stay patient, and keep working on it.

There you go. Sorry for the huge pics, my computer's an *. The thing is, I like the uneven, undecorated look. It's got a certain aesthetic to it. Also, the slightly longer middle part goes out onto my hand a bit, which is helpful cause I'm fighting single blue almost exclusively. I might, if i get the chance, put a design on it, but for now it remains as is. It does need to be modified slightly at the wrist, so the edges aren't as close together. And I took a chunk out of the inside so I could actually bend my elbow. :)

the only problem with the longer piece hanging over on to your hand is if you need to rotate your wrist for a shot, it will stab you in the back of the hand or just flat out not let you throw the shot.

on a side note, scrap work armor is awesome. i built my whole ravager set out of a 15lb bag of scraps(head to toe coverage)

Actually, Ryu, it's much less restrictive than it looks. Any chance I could a get a look at that armor?

Just found out that this leather is not armor-grade. It's about 1/16 of an inch thinner than it needs to be. *.

I though about doing that. But by the time I'll have cash to get more leather of any thickness, I'll also have the cash to just pay someone for a pair of the * things. I have this habit of either being loaded or skint broke at any given time, but never in the middle. And I was looking forward to showing it off at practice, too :(

You can still wear it and show it off, you just can't call armor when it gets hit.

So... when you're loaded, just spend SOME of the money on leather and make your own passing ones. Then keep some of the money. Then you won't be broke. Voila, logic.

That's a good idea. Too bad I don't make good decisions. Yeah, though, I'm gonna get this one legal, and later I'll get some custom ones from Fork or somebody. You can't have too much armor, you know.

1/16th of an inch dosent seem like a lot. and it would be vary hard to notice. leather varies in thickness so measure several different areas. it could have been just a thiner spot in the leather.

I have. I measured all over it, and it fails. I'm just gonna take it anyway, and my RL passes it, I'm using it. He usually just eyeballs armor anyway.

like i said. 1/16th of an inch is a very small amount. it could be at one point your leather was thicker but being old it could have gotten flattened slightly over time
