Brain Buckets

Postby Forkbeard » Fri Sep 17, 2010 12:32 pm

In looking at pictures from not only our game, but a heap of other fighting games and larps I've noticed a common problem.
No helmets. Well not enough. And most helmets in Dagorhir and Belegarth are really elaborate masks.
I'd like to change that.
I've figured out a way to make very strong helmet domes that are all shaped properly and are all the same. I'm currently making 3. The first is loose in the world. It's in this helmet:
Image
I'm in progress on the other 3.
Here's 2 of the domes early on.
Image
Image
I'm planning to make a regular ol' spangenhelm. Much like this, but in leather.
Image
They'll be dyed any 2 colors for $75.
If you want 5, you get $5 off each. If you want 10, $10 off each. ( i like to make stuff in batches.
What do you fine folks think?
I'd like some honest input before I get started.

I would buy one, either as spagenhelm with nasal, or with a transitional faceplate (I'd imagine the latter would have an upcharge). It looks a lot less of a headache then finishing up my modified great helm...

Your work is exceptional and I wish you the best of luck.

Just mulling the idea over in my head, that's a nice incentive you offer to those who would buy in bulk, but considering how unique most people like their kits to be, I imagine it could be difficult to even get five people together to all go in at once on the same similar styles of helm unless they were looking for unit uniformity. Other than the color scheme, are you able or willing to provide other accoutrements / modifications / carving or stamping?

I like the look of them and I support there being more solid helmets out there. I'm glad their stitched, because I like stitched leather and I think too many people rely on rivets.

I won't be buying any, as I make my own equipment and have no money right now, but I'll recommend your work to anyone who is looking to armor up.

TIberius, Unit uniformity is exactly the point to the bulk deal.
Being in a unit that all wears the same mask, I can see the use of uniform helmets.
Also, looking at the numbers of people in units that do a viking theme(there are more of these than you think) and then the Romans, I think there will be some groups of people who want matching hats.
Of course I'll be making different types of helms. They'll all have the quartered top like a spangenhelm. There's only so much you can do to bend leather into a dome. I can use the same dome to make any helmet, though. With the addition of differnt cheek plates, back plates and stuff can make anything from a early greek helmet to a samuria helm. Barbute's and sallet, greathelms, I can do anything.
The basic viking type spangenhelm is just the cheapest and most basic.
Magpie, thanks. Yourr support means alot. I really love the look you get with stitching. It takes a minute, but it's so worth it in the long run.
More pics monday.

Beauty in function, indeed! Great Work!

I have a few neophyte warriors in my realm who are looking for a helm that provides a degree of customizability- I'll pass this along, as the prices are really good for custom work of this caliber. Would you need head measurements? Also, would you charge more for metallic colors?

I would imagine that the four piece arrangement is also ideal for making boob parts on female armor.

Fork, your work is amazing, as usual.

Have you considered alternate designs? Personally speaking, how about having facial tentacles instead of the full jaw (ie my avatar pic, just not so much sticking forward)

Maybe I'm just crazy.

Sieg, I'd paint on metalics with acrylic paint, so it wouldn't be more expensive.
Arrakis, thats where the secrets start, bro.
Draconius, I can make you a tentacle faced helmet, yes. The basic design I'm talking about is the viking type spangenhelm for $75. Additions (like wierd mind flayer faces)only cost more money. You can have pretty much whatever you want.

Some honest feedback. The helm kick *, fits like a cap and doesnt flop around with how fork straps em. I totally suggest anyone thinking about getting a helm talk to this guy. Not getting shot in the face and having a good looking helm is the win. The first helm is mine btw.
Thanks agian ForkBeard.
