Bracer slippage

Postby Juggernaut » Wed Sep 29, 2010 3:49 am

Just a quick inquiry.

Over the years I have used a variety of both plate and leather bracers, but always encountered downward movement, which limited the range of movement in my wrist.

Even cinching the straps tightly has made little difference with sweaty arms or moving shirt sleeves (for when the bracer was strapped over a long-sleeve tunic). I understand how the motion of throwing sword swings naturally propels the bracer towards the wrist.

Do fighters just try to soften or roll that part of the leather or is there a bracer design that minimizes this kind of movement?

I am guessing this is fairly common, but I wondered if any creative skinsmiths had come up with a handy solution.

Mine just goes up and is stopped by my wrist, which has built up callouses. Not pretty, but it works.

Perhaps you could connect it via the elbow to another piece of armor on your upper arm and shoulder? I assume that would help.

Mine have a thing to stop them from falling off, my hands.
Seriously, you're right and your screwed. This happens to everybody.
You cou;d oil the offending area and try to soften it up.
Many SCA dude sew their forarm protection on ther elbow pad. This helps alot of them.

I wear my bracers over MMA gloves and flare the ends. This completely solves the problem.

Same here, my gloves keep my bracers in place. I strap em tight, with the wrist end of the glove attacked around the bottom of the bracer. No slippage.

I actually do the reverse of this. MMA gloves on over the very end of the bracer. Makes it stay nice and still.

I guess this same issue could be applied to cuisse (thigh) armor. Since we don't use knee cops, they could strap into knee pads.

Anyway, thanks for the input. I wonder if anyone customizes mma gloves so they don't look so non-period.

Same, my bracer is strapped pretty loose and comfy because of this now too.

Tool leather all sweet like and sew it to the mma glove, Jug, have a sweet cool looking glove. Wouldn't be too hard to make it look like a demi imo.

Could you host on Photobucket or something? That or I could just friend you. I'd be interested to see how to modify them.

It's actually not my photo. I would move it to photobucket and re-post, but my photobucket won't sign in for some reason.

I dipped my bracers on the wrist end in water for about 10-15 seconds then fight with them until they dried. It worked out well in terms of fitting, but all around my wrist it flairs out from how it ended up drying.

i wear weight lifting gloves when i wear my armor, they go at least 3 inches past the wrist, then i put the bracer on over it, this keeps it from slipping and pads where it will jab and rub. other than that you can use a sweat band for your wrist to wear under it, thats what i also used for a long time, and again padding and no slip

Does anyone recommend a particular brand of mma gloves? Preferably ones that don't fall apart easily.

I and several other fighters I know have been using the Harbinger gloves for several seasons and they're still going strong.

Do those have enough padding on the top?

Edit: Ah, didn't see they had bag gloves besides their weightlifting line.

These gloves are awesome:

You have to take a seam ripper to cut out the bar though, but that's quick work and doesn't damage the gloves at all if you're careful.

Yeah Juggernaut, the medieval solution would be to either attach them to some sort of elbow protection or to point them to your tunic sleeve.

And as far as the leather MMA gloves, just make leather half gaultets. I've seen people wear leather half and full gauntlets for years in Amtgard to protect fingers.

Those are the "bag" gloves, which i still use after 2+ years. Next time, though, i'm gonna grab the "fighter" version. they have the same knuckle/finger protection but have a open palm, which i prefer.

See I want to get some of these Century gloves for the knuckle protection because they seem awesome.. but I feel like my thumb is going to get beat the hell up with the lack of thumb protection.. any other ones people like?
