Words With Chain.

Postby Horati OTFH » Thu Oct 07, 2010 9:42 am

Has anyone tried to spell words out with different colored chain links? Like spelling the words of your unit and putting it into your shirt. Anyone tried this?

It would be rather difficult to do, but not impossible. Would really take a LOT of time to do. Also, you would have to make sure your chain was always right-side out as the easiest way to take off the chain is to bend over and let it fall inside out.

I put a cross into my chainmail. Took me about 10hrs to do between the planning, doing, and laying it into my armor. I make it as a patch and put it into the chain while removing the same amount of chain out of the finished hauberk.

The pic is about 8years old, so yea...I look older now, but I haven't grown much around the waist. So it fits me about the same.

Thanks Thor. I was planning to do the words and then work it into the shirt. It is going to say my units name. I will post pics of it as it goes through.

Horati,
I would strongly suggest doing the letters first, then adding surrounding chain links to make it a solid sheet. Then adding it into the piece. It takes a while, but the finished piece ends up turning out nicely. I can't wait to see it. :D

You talking to me Mr. BW?

Thor-- I will take your advice and take a pic when I have it done.

The tighter your weave, the easier it is to put something in it and have it show nicely. IE: most standard 4-1 is a pretty loose weave, making it tough to put something in it and have it show well. Same size rings in a 6-1 pattern shows your design a lot better. The cost, of course, is higher weight and slightly less flexibility.

Mine is actually the standard 4in1 weave. I just made sure it was laying closed when it was on me. I did sacrifice in the way of weight (I could probably get away with 2/3 of my weave for my frame) but I feel it looks better how I did it. I didn't need to do such a tight weave such as 6in1 or 8in2. I didn't loose any mobility doing it this way :)

Blackwolfe, if you were asking about Horati's quote, I might point you in the direction of the novel "Fight Club", and, of course, the movie of the same name.

Exactly my point - this is why the horizontal wings of your cross are extremely compressed and not in proportion with the rest of your crusader's cross.

They're actually that way because I didn't want it going any further across my chest. I cut the pattern short since, if you notice, they don't go all the way to the edge of the top part of the cross.

Note: I was also running out of bronze rings and didn't want to buy more...
