Leather lamellar plate thickness

Using the "standard" international lame http://www.armourarchive.org/patterns/lamellar_templarbob/ is there enough overlap in the plates to be able to use 8oz leather for the plates and still have it be legal armor? If so, does http://skaldic.com/bodyArmor-lamellar.htm seem reasonable, or am I better off just manning up and cutting my own plates?

If not I suppose I'll just save my pennies and get some Sable Manticore stuff or fix my cheap, crappy 16 ga maile. The 14 ga just gets heavy, and I am old and fat. I can't see stainless steel lamellar being a weight savings over 14 ga maile, but I could be wrong.

As long as the plates are doulbed up, 8 oz is good. I'm making scales for a samurai suit on the same basis.

Hrm, research indicates that if I can swing it, the 13-15 oz saddle skirting is the most cost effective (if not the most time effective) as it is on sale. Fixing the maile it is then. Thanks.
