Started Plate armor.

Postby Kaisryk » Thu Nov 11, 2010 8:45 pm

I went to Cleftland's Armourer's guild for the first time in a few months, and started working on my plate armor. So far I've got the spaulders, knee cops, lames, and whatever the things that attach to the spaulders patterned out.

I made a couple cuts, with a hacksaw and a cold chisel. ****'s a **** * on 16 gauge mild steel, and my friend that's using 14 gauge stainless steel has to use a plasma cutter.

I can't start the breastplate or greaves until I see how the other pieces fit together. Anyways, pictures.

Lames, which are riveted to the knee cops and provide joint mobility.

Definitely quite a workout using the cold chisel.

I'm here to point out that rigid metal elbow and knee cops are not allowed in Belegarth combat. That said, I can't wait to see how this turns out. Keep us updated.

This is my SCA armor, but it's all related.

I don't really see a point in metal armor for Belegarth, might as well just use leather.

Too true, dude.

I used 16 ga. rolled steel for my SCA heavy armor as well, but I wimped out and used a 12 amp jigsaw with 32 tpi blades, and a lot of sharpening oil, to cut my plates. Serious man points for cutting yours with a freaking chisel. Can't wait to see the final product!

Stop.
Don't cut that out with a chisel. Go with your freind and use a the plasma cutter. You'll get all the work done in the time it takes to cut out ONE piece by hand with the chisel. Just becuase they did something 1000 years ago doesn't mean it is the right way.
PLASMA CUTTER.
I've been working steel for 16 years and would not bother to cut sheet metal with anything less than a power saw. But since you can, use the palsma.
This feels familiar. Seig, didn't we have this same conversation about utility knives as opposed to handle-less razor blades?

Plasma cutters win on the sole basis of holy **** did you just cut that piece of metal with a beam of 10000 degree ions?

Which conversation? I don't mean to be dumb here, but was the cutting armor leather with a naked razor being compared to the jigsaw cutting or the chisel cutting? I can assure everyone that I always wear gloves and goggles, and clamp everything down before I jigsaw stuff. As for the chisel cutting, I just think that if one has the devotion to chisel cut steel, that's great.

But yeah, I still have all of my fingers so far.

The "you need to stop using naked razor blades" conversation about a year ago.
I thought that was you and it started over your bug eye mask and pictures with blood all over the background.
I could be wrong, though.
Anyway, deication to mindless drudgery is never a good thing. Chisels are for short cuts on thick stuff. With the cleaning and filing of the edges needed after chiseling a peice out, you might as well saw/plasma it out and them grind the edge.

Talk to some of the guildies about one of theses, Kaisryk.

Beverly Shears
http://www.lowbucktools.com/beverly.html
Beverly shears tend to be more common than epic armor lazorz.

Also to comment on cutting leather with razor blades. **** that noise; I'd much rather buy a good pair of leather shears. I keep mine pad locked; no one is using my shears for paper puppets.

lol, that was a long time ago, when I used naked razors on leather. I didn't even mind the cuts on my hands as much as the loss of blade control. Nowadays, I use box-cutters and surgical scalpels for thinner stuff, and the jigsaw for 16 oz leather.

I'll probably invest in some of those steel cutting shears when I go further into steelwork.
