Best dye for armor

Postby Divit » Sat Jan 01, 2011 3:42 pm

I know I saw this somewhere but now I can't. What is the best brand of dye to use for dying armor grade leather? If you know where this is posted (God I fail at forum searches) please direct me, and the mods can just delete this if they want.

Most people use Fiebings. Probably go for the spirit based dye (not the Eco-Flo stuff) unless you know what you're doing.

I've only had experience with black and the dark red, but I definitely use Fiebings as well.

The oil based fiebrings is a bit more pricey, but goes on perfect in one coat most of the time. I've only used the black though.

2-3 coats of Fiebrings dye, plus a coat of sealer if you wish. I typically forgo the sealer myself, but I'd assume it will help with the color fading.

Btw, I've used brown, navy blue, light blue, green, and black for my stuff over the years, and I've never been disappointed. Just be sure to rub down your leather with a paper towel when the dye dries; this will remove the excess dye, and help even out the finish.

The Eco-flo comes in more colors, but the Fiebings is easier to use. If you do end up with Eco-flo, then make sure you case the leather first. The extra moisture helps the dye to better penetrate, achieving a more even coat.

Also, I dye before oven hardening, which also helps. I'm not sure if you can do that with the oil dye, though.

I don't mind the eco-flo: much easier to mix and clean up, imo. However, they don't play nice with the other dyes, so pic a type and stick with it.

i havent had any issue with it so far, its been dyed for like 2 months and the leather is still supple and all that jazz. holds the stain and hasnt faded or anything either. so far havent seen any downside.

I know this is over a year old, I just thought it was important enough to bump so as to make it easier to find for future use.
Of particular note is casing the leather so as to allow better penetration of the dye (as pertains to usage of Eco Flo).
Anyone have any suggestions on after dying, what brand/type/finish of gloss should I use to seal the piece?

I took a page out of Plithut's book and use Saddle Lac. It's pretty nice if you're looking for a high gloss, though be aware that it can alter how certain dyes look after you apply it, so test it out on scrap first.
