Pauldron and Body Strap

Postby Jcollins » Sun Jan 09, 2011 1:25 pm

Heya,

I've got some 10-12oz leather I'd like to make some armor out of. I'm thinking either a single pauldron with a body strap or 2 pauldrons with a strap connected to a ring in the middle of the chest area.

akin to this

or this

Just needed some tips or any advice before I launch into this venture. I've never made leather pauldrons before or a body rig like this and didnt want * the pooch before I got started.

first off, your first image didnt post.
second, make sure that anything your going to use is at least12 oz.

i like using the single pauldron and body strap method, using two with a connector is gonna slide around in my experience

Rocca and Acorn had a similar project earlier this year, here is the thread link:

http://board.belegarth.com/viewtopic.php?f=107&t=35411

Couple of tips on making them:
--Shape the lames to make them fit better. Most make flat lames that wrap around the upper arm because they are strapped that way, but this ends up looking funky and not being as comfortable. Curve the lames, and even dish them slightly, to get a good fit. You can even put them on your arm/shoulder while wet and ace bandage them on to shape them really well.
--The top lame (that goes over the point of the shoulder) should be dished or formed in a way that makes it bowl. This helps it fit more snugly onto your shoulder point and prevents slippage.
--If you are going to do two pauldrons connected across the chest (with a ring, I think you said?), also put straps from that ring going to under armpit. It will help hold on the rig.
--Lastly, for holding pauldrons in place, nothing beats pointing them to a gambeson, arming coat/jacket, or piece of torso armor.

Hope this helps.

This is really actually overkill. With pauldrons, specifically in that style with the overlapping plates there's never really a spot that isn't 2 overlapped pieces of leather, in our sport you can use 2 layers of leather to get 12 oz, so 10-12 will work fine. Most people I know use 8oz.

sorry, jimmy forgot about overlap. to clarify all the statements, make sure that with a total of two layers of leather that the thickness is at least 12 oz

But seriously I would probably fail any pauldrons like that unless they were exceptionally well made.

So I know this is a necro, but to answer, as far as using lighter oz leather on shoulders, I was remembering someone else's advice, so I might have misquoted something somewhere. But I know people, for sure, who use lighter than 12oz on shoulders because the overlap gives the 2 layer effect.

But it doesn't. The parts that are overlapped would count as armor, sure. But the parts that aren't, at the base of the shoulder and on the upper arm, wouldn't count as armor, despite looking like armor to attackers and being almost indistinguishable to the wearer for calling purposes, as well.

Sounds pretty lame to me.

I also recommend leather armor that doesn't flex. 10-12oz layered... sure. 8oz layered? That's pushing it. Still legal, but starting to get really cheesy.

Also, when I made a strap, I attached it with a loop under the armpit and a strap that goes around my body. It's also attached to a .... "bracer" on my bicep.

You can kind of see it here:
