Helmet Padding

Postby Tobia Blackthorn » Fri Jan 14, 2011 2:59 pm

I got my helmet in today, a finely crafted piece from Forkbeard, who I wish to thank once more. Now, I need to pad it to fit of course, but I want to make sure to pad it correctly. I was thinking of just using strips of blue foam, since I have plenty on hand. I think I've seen others on the boards use blue if I remember correctly. So, to those who wear helmets, what method do you use to pad them?

In my helmet I padded the top, the ears and the forehead. One band going across the forehead, then in the center of that make another band that goes back to the back of your head. Then make two pieces that go over your ears, getting hit in the ear with 12-13 oz. leather is a *. I used gold's gym yoga mat to pad mine, I just like the comfort of the squishyness.

How you place the foam is going to depend on exactly how the helm is constructed. Put it on your head with no padding and see how it wiggles around.

Is your head's circumference too small for the interior circumference of the helm? Put some padding around the band.

Sit too low on your head? Put some padding in the top.

Once it fits on your head securely, start thinking about getting hit in the head with a melee weapon. Like Kraesh said - if there are ear pieces, think about how it'd feel if you got smoked there. Add some foam if you think it'll hurt.

Have a big dangly lobster tail? Maybe add some padding under that to save your neck some pain.

It's really going to boil down to your individual helmet and how it currently fits on your head vs. how you want it to fit.

This is my helm: Image

This is how I've padded it. I still need to install the chin strap and a bit of nose padding. That's scrap 1/2" minicell foam I had lying about, held together with strapping and hockey tape.

Naturally, YMMV based on the helm/et you have, but this is just how I handled it. It fits very well unless I'm running, and putting on the chin strap will fix that.

I use layers of 1/4" eva foam with adhesive on one side.
But other than that, Derians instructions are exactly what I would have said.
I like to use the thinner foam becuase I can layer it in thinner and thicker in different places.
One could cut 1/2" padding horizonataly and use carpet tape, also.

The other option of course is that you could get yourself a stuffed fabric (linen) helmet insert. These work just as well as foam and generally breathe and wick sweat much better, although it'd probably cost you $15 or $20.
