Loaner Armor: Sweat and Germs

Postby Teej » Tue Jan 18, 2011 6:23 pm

So I'm going to have a stockpile of loaner armor soon. I was curious what good methods of cleaning armor are... Initially, I'm thinking that bowling shoe spray. Any better ideas?

That bowling shoe spray is Lysol. Don't go overboard and it should be fine, let the armor air dry if someone has nastied up up, then give it a quick spray and voila! You are all set.

I'm not a leather expert, but I am medically literate. Does rubbing alcohol damage leather? If so disregard this next bit. Rubbing alcohol and water mixed in a simple 1:1 ratio is a common used "sterilization" solution in hospitals. I use bunny ears to point out that this is in a rehab hospital where the same equipment is used often with little time for complete sterilization in between. This would clearly not be good enough for an OR.

I think you should coat the inside of all of it with some kind of Scotchguard or other waterproofing spray.
You also need to let it air dry in the sape you want it to stay in after use. This is easy with personal gear, but with loaner gear it can get tricky.

For this I would suggest storing it on a mannequin while it dries and when it's not in use. The people using it can deal with the discomfort or buy their own personally shaped armor.

Not a bad suggestion from either of you.

I'm not sure if I can afford a mannequin for every set I'm getting, but I'll look into it.
