More badness

Postby Woodstock » Thu Jan 20, 2011 7:14 pm

Alright, so I'm starting to get the hang of this leather business.

Image

As many of you can probably tell, this armor borrows heavily from the Assassin's Creed design, somewhere between the armor of Altair and the leather armor, both of which are upgrades to Ezio's original assassin's robes.

A closer look at the bracers... I know the tooling has it's rough spots, but that was actually the tool- I had bought one that had a crooked stamp and I didn't notice until after some sizeable mistakes. The lady at Tandy was nice enough to give me a new one at no extra charge, thankfully :)

The unfinished cape.

The pauldron

And finally, the man-skirt. I realized a while back that my crotch simply wasn't getting enough attention, so I think this'll remedy that up quite nicely.

Basically, this is three point of armor in Amt because it's all either at or above 3/16" and has "worksmanship".
Anyone have any suggestions on what I should make to accompany this? Besides putting another layer of leather under the first one. Or attaching the second pauldron to the first. It's on my to do list, okay?

Pretty * good IMO, great tooling. I would not have noticed if you didn't post a pic zoomed in on the one messup - it's not really a big deal anyway. Great work!

Looks good, Woodstock. I would suggest perhaps painting the tooling in a different color to highlight it. It would really make the details stand out. Also, it's a little bit hard to tell but did you use a swivel knife and beveler for the edges? Using a beveler allows you add a "3-D" effect to your designs and make them really pop out:

Note the edges of the designs and how they appear to stand out from the background.

Your armor looks pretty sweet. I did notice that you mentioned a cape.

Please don't put a cape on there. It will not be as cool as you think. Just add the rest of the leather bits and go with it. It's nice enough as is...

I used a swivel knife, yes. I didn't use a beveler because I don't own any. As far as paint goes, definitely not! I like the way latigo looks on it's own- Notice that when pressure is exerted on latigo, such as when it gets stamped, it appears darker than the surrounding material. I had a pretty powerful flash on some of those shots, so let me assure you- It looks much more badass in person.

What stamp did you use for the texture on the inside of your designs?

I don't know what it's called.... It just looked cool, and it was on clearance, so I grabbed it, dropped fifty cents, and went on browsing.

Yeah, pretty much. I'm getting a white tunic made to wear under it.

Good job on the tooling. Buy a beveler, trust me, you won't regret it.

When depressing the areas around where you previously used a swivel knife is it necessary to wet the area? That's what I have been doing, but it keeps making the areas swell back up. Noobish, but its my first time using a swivel so I wanna make sure im doing it right.

It varies between types of leather. I suggest you LIGHTLY mist it. If it's more than two shades darker, it may be too wet. Don't let it swell. Always test your tools on a scrap of the leather you bought. Just a 3 inch piece. Go to town on it and experiment, but be sure to "listen" to the leather.

Wetting the leather for tooling is called casing. You want to use a spray bottle and wet both sides with the spray bottle thoroughly. The trick then is to wait about 5-10 minutes (depending on thickness, longer for thicker) before tooling. The leather should be cool to the touch. Look for the stage where any little fingernail touch will mark the leather. At this stage, the beveler or stamp will have the best effect.

If you have a leather shop nearby, most places will offer a brief tutorial on tooling for free, which can be very helpful to solidify the process.
