Rules on leather spacing

Postby Zuloo » Sat Feb 26, 2011 9:09 pm

Not sure if this has been discussed before, but how far apart can leather be spaced before its illegal?
the reason i ask is im thinking of making a war skirt out of 6 or 8 oz leather and putting 13-15 oz leather plates on it, want to know the rules before i mess something up

3.3. Armor must not catch appendages. Fingers should not catch in Armor. This includes articulated plates and large diameter chain.

3.7.1. Studded, scaled, or brigandine Armor can only be counted as Armor if 2/3 of the target area is covered by metal or leather, or the studs/rings/plates can not be more than 1/2 inch apart.

I couldn't find anything about gaps in armor aside from the fact that armor doesn't protect places it doesn't cover.

Unless the black part is 3/16" thick it doesn't pass. The gaps between the red plates would have to be closer together, they don't look at all like they are just .5" apart.

It would probably be more aesthetically pleasing if you just made sure your backing was armor grade, rather than trying to make a bunch of squares all .5" apart from each other.

Wouldn't really function the same though.

If you want the plates the same configuration as in the picture then just make them .5" wide and you're golden.

The gaps around and between the armor grade material(whatever it is) can not be more than 1/2".
its right there in the quote you put up, karesh. Written quite clearly.
plates, either leather or metal, studs, rings. All can have no larger than a 1/2" gap between.
So, your answer is yes, you cab build your skirt. But the pattern in the picture wont work.
it looks gay anyway. Yoc cab do much better.

Oh, i almost forgot.
if the base is 8oz, you can use the same 8oz for the plates and it will be legal. And lighter.you can sew them on instead of rivet to make it even lighter.
this is important in a skirt type thing. The heavier they are the more they want to fall down.

yeah i got to thinking about it, with the half inch rule it doesnt really work the same, and i was going to make the red plates black with the backing, but i got a different plan going now, should be alot easier and keep the mobility of the 8 oz backing i was planning on using before. but thanks for your help guys
