Stupid question??

Postby Fuegan » Tue May 17, 2011 1:53 pm

Ok so I've just searched the boards for the past 2 hours and either I'm retarded, or the question hasn't been asked... or nobody cared enough to ask. So here it is, when using Forkbeards oven hardening method on leather, how does one go about keeping the leather from burning on the cookie sheet? Is it as simple as greasing the sheet? Or... well **** that's probably it isn't it?

THANKS!!!

I've never needed too. At 180 degrees, you're fine for the most part. Just check whatever you're hardening every 20 mins or so and you're good to go.

If you got it wet enough, 180 degrees shouldn't burn it because the water should absorb all the energy.

the only part that burns is any edge that's in direct contact with the cookie sheet, not the whole thing. Although afterwards I was curious as to how the piece would react when put in the microwave... it's interesting

A slight darkening or burn on the edges isn't uncommon. It shouldn't harm the piece, unless its bad, in which case you simply left it in the oven too long. That's from my experience anyway.

I'm not really worried about it I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing an obvious step. I only had it in the oven for about 5-10 minutes and it was completely saturated when I put it in, and the oven was only set to 180

Your oven is hotter than it says it is. Or it could be a convection oven, which heat differnetly and more powerfully.
You can leave leather in a 180 degree oven for hours if its wet all the way through.
The only way it can burn in 5-10 minute is that your oven is too hot.

Nope.

Metal, especially thicker metal, can focus heat and disburse it into the leather more quickly than air can.

The easy solution and the one I use is: Silicone backing sheets, or, the cheapo version, (non-treated, dear God) 2x4 slats to lay your workpiece on in the oven.
