According to the Book of War:

3.5. The minimum thickness for leather Armor is 3/16 inch. The minimum thickness requirement can be achieved by layering up to two pieces of thinner leather.

The leather has to be at least 12 oz. in weight to equal 3/16" in thickness but you can use two layers to reach that thickness. Keep in mind that most leather sides have a weight range due to the variances in thickness in the different areas of the side. You may see a side that is at 10-12 oz. That would not necessarily be legal unless it's layered. Usually what most people look for is 12-14 oz. saddle skirting. Stay away from sole bend unless you have a lot of patience and very sharp knives. Sole bend is compressed leather like that used for shoe soles. It's very tough and long wearing but a cast-iron witch to work with.

The larp grade leather in that pic looks to be anywhere from six to eight oz. The diamonds on it might be thick enough to make it legal under the layered leather rule, but definitely not everywhere and i will personally make fun of you on the field if i see you wearing it.

Honestly, if your thinking about dropping that much cash on a piece of crap like that, design your own chest piece and have one of the leather workers on these boards build it for you out of armor grade leather.

It will look 100 times better and you can feel better about yourself knowing you look like a badass instead of a kid who bought barely passing crap online.

Just to be helpful:
http://www.darkknightarmoury.com
http://www.schmitthenner.com/leatherarmor.htm
http://www.leatherlore.com/ (ask for 3/16" Thickness)

But honestly, if you are thinking of dropping that much cash consider spending it in the community. The people here can do custom work too. You'll make friends, no one will make fun of your armor if someone here makes it, and you will look hella balling.

ALSO: I got to be front and center as a movie extra wearing Forkbeard's Celtic helmet. I am telling you that you will be a movie star if you buy from him. I did and now I'm famous! Another guy wore a headband Fork made them, and they were in a movie too! AND another guy wore armor made by him and he was in a fight scene in a movie. PM Forkbeard NOW and become a movie star!

PS: It may have all been the same movie.

Yes, Cheesehart, myself, and Logan Steel were all prominent extras (wearing your work) in the movie "Marital Combat," so now all of your work has been featured in a full length romantic comedy about a couple who get lost in the woods where a LARP war is occurring. The So Cal fighters were garbed so well that we upstaged the main actors in their Universal Studios attire, and often had to be rearranged so that we would look less imposing. I think there were 35 of us, mainly from Bel and Dag, so see us soon at a US film festival...

It totally depends on what you want. "Designing" it yourself will not save you any money. Armor is armor.
From me, head to toe suits cost from $900-$1500, but, you can buy individual pieces rather tha the whole suit.
pm me pictures of what you want.
Thanks
