I Want To Avoid Pain

Postby Cheeseheart » Fri Jan 20, 2012 9:47 pm

So recently I commissioned an awesome leatherworker (Sieglatan) to make me a manica, which I would preferably like to wear shirtless. Problem is, the strap that goes around and underneath my left armpit is cutting into my skin, without me even getting it there, but just by simple movement. Is there anything kind of material I can put on the strap to put a stop to it cutting into my skin?

get a large piece of leather 2 inches by 8 inches then put slots at either end that you can slip each end of the belt through. This will protect you from the buckle

The buckle is not the problem.

just wear some black under armor, you probably dont want your armor sweat drenched anyway. The under armor will be thin enough to still breathe as if you were almost shirtless.

lol, Thanks for the shoutout, sir!

What I would recommend is to get some Elmer's white glue (Aileen's Original Tacky glue is a little better, but would require a trip to Michaels), some clips or c-clamps, and some soft leather, preferably deer or buffalo. Simply wrap the part of the strap that is cutting into you with the soft leather, find out how much you need, cut out, apply a thin coat of glue on both surfaces, bring together, clamp shut (a stack of books on top of the strap also does wonders), and wait overnight! The soft leather will prevent the strap from forming an edge against your skin, and should be smooth enough that it wont chafe or rip open your skin under combat conditions.

I feel sheepish that I didn't catch this earlier, but then again, every time I modeled it, I wore a shirt~!

It's not a breathability issue, it's about an aesthetic. The aesthetic requires I go shirtless.

Sieg, I'll keep that in mind and I'll likely hit up Tandy Leather today.

I don't think there is either armor I have made or bought that doesn't "get you" when you wear it over skin. I wouldn't feel bad Sieg, I just don't think armor grade leather is meant to be a comfortable garment.

Underarmor looks not only like ****, but TOTALLY MODERN. You can not wear an underarmor shirt and nothing else.
Futthermore you DO want to sweat all over your armor and DO wearing underarmor. It wicks away sweat, right, where do you think it goes?
Now on to your pit, I would not glue the soft leather in. Glue makes things weird and your pit swaet will destroy it very soon.
Instead, put a 1/4"peice of eva foam over the edge of the strap, then put on you soft leather and sew it on. Keep the stiching away from the edge that rubs you.
now wear it till it breaks in and gets comfy. It will in a few weeks of fighting at your rate.

to speed up the leather break down you could hit the leather with a hammer to soften it up
