I'm wanting to make a sleeve of leather similar to that of a gladiator's arm guard. I've made graves and a bracer so I know the basics of leather working. My main concern though is restricting myself with this piece. Does anyone have any good tips for what I should do so that I can still move my elbow just fine while wearing the sleeve?
Pretty much like that. I haven't drawn out exactly how want to do mine, and that's mainly because I'm not sure what to do at the elbow. What's shown in that picture looks like it would hinder some movement. If you search for gladiator arm armor or arm guard, there are lots of other pictures of similar sleeves.
Do a floating attachment down the back of the individual pieces. I don't have any reference pictures handy, but I'm sure one of our resident armorers will be along shortly with resources.

The piece of armor you're creating is called a manica. Here is an authoritative website with a design based off of a historical artifact. The website has pictures of how it looks / moves on the outside and inside of the piece.
Someone in the know can tell you if the pattern needs to be modified for a leather cop.
