Genitalia Protection?

Postby Mitzunare » Sun Apr 01, 2012 5:30 pm

I'm not sure exactly where this thread should go, but I've had numerous situations where I've been accidentally stricken in my unmentionables.. I was wondering; what have you guys come across that is the most effective way of protecting one's genitalia? Is a simple cup the best method, or do they take up too much space down there for the movement and positioning that will inevitably be needed during fighting?

A shield?

Honestly I tried to wear a cup. It took me one practice to realize that I'd rather take the chance than try to fight with a piece of plastic chafing and molesting all day long.

I can count on one hand how many times I've taken serious shots to the netherlands in close to a decade of fighting. I'm not sure if your luck is bad or if mine is good. It could just be because I usually fight sword and board. Most of my deaths are limb shots-- shins or biceps.

I've only been to about 5 practices and 1 event.. I'd say I've taken at least one shot each visit.. I usually go florentine or Sword & Board.

It typically happens during Florentine, or if I get hit on my shield arm and have to drop my shield.. I usually go up against people my own size, the people who do tricks and flips, so it happens rather often. ;-;

All it took was one good hit DIRECTLY on it, I was turned into an accordion. I'd like to take some precautions.

If you're taking nutshots while going sword and board, you either need a bigger shield, or more practice on your shieldwork. If you're new, it's probably the latter. You'll get there.

I can see it being more of a problem with flourentine. I bought a cup for when I used to use spears all the time. Again, I hated it. I also tried this padded leather thing you wear outside the pants; in addition to looking ridiculous, it was only slightly less uncomfortable than the cup. After that I gave up and just decided to be more careful. Seems to have worked.

Best advice I can give is to just try to keep your body back and out of the fight, and try to keep your protection close, be it a shield or a second weapon. Nutshots or not, that's pretty solid advice in general.

I would suggest this:

Nutty buddy

It conforms to the body and moves well while you fight. In the SCA its required to wear a cup and this is the most common one suggested.

I'll check it out and look up some reviews. Thank you guys very much for the input.. I'll probably end up not using it, I just have to get over my fear of the nutshots. :( So not fun.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, THIS.

Mine's fantastic. I put it on, and five minutes later, I forget it's there. They're a little more expensive than your standard sporting goods store cups, but believe me, it's paid for itself on multiple occasions.

While your photo leads me to question this, Your a man. Your #1 area to always protect in this sport if your not going to wear a cup, is your nuts. Always and forever the first thing you protect. Anything else is secondary. Or get a cup and being a ballsy mother **** in this game of chance.

I get REALLY into fighting is all I can say. :)
Someone whispered me and told me about a product called Shock Doctor Titan Alloy..

It seems rather awesome, he linked me to a page on eBay where you can buy it. I recommend anyone interested in this checks it out.

I heard a horror story of a fighter's plastic cup breaking into fragments and causing... damage. It persuaded me to spring for this:
http://compare.ebay.com/like/1407214664 ... s&var=sbar

It's never going to crack apart and it's never gotten in the way of my motions, and I do everything from sprinting to turning backwards somersaults in this game. I'd recommend it.

Something he shared with me. ^ /shudder

I wear a nutty buddy for Bel and SCA at all times. I would highly recommend it to any male fighter who enjoys having a pair.

One of the top Knights of Numenor was actually hospitalized by a nutshot, and was at serious risk of losing Lefty. To reiterate the above: it can happen to anybody, and it blows.
