Leather Fantasy Elven Knight Full Suit of Armor

Hey all, its been a while. How is everyone out there in armor land? Well, here's one of my more recent works. As usual, not larp legal, nor meant to be, but I suspect if the feather details were tooled in instead of cut out on certain edges it'd be there or close.

All leather full suit with an elven fantasy theme. Only component it doesn't have is the gorget but instead it has a large collar. It was given a sort of metallic gunmetal silver paint. I designed on computer and laser cut the scale skirting and gauntlet finger components. Everything else was hand patterned and cut.

This was ordered for an upcoming Samsung commercial but I haven't been given much info on it so I don't know when it will air but hopefully it will be soon, I'm eager to finally see some of my work on screen.

Here are some thumbnails with dA links for larger images and once there see the 'download' button if you want the full view.

This is amazing work! You should post a link to the commercial once it comes out.

Is this suit meant to be fully mobile and functional in addition to looking really nice?

What did you use to dye/paint the leather? I'm trying to get a color similar to that but not sure what I should use to get there.

I know its been a while, but here is the commercial.

Since this suit won't be seen outside this commercial, we started making bits and pieces of it from the patterns and selling them at conventions. Including a full face version of the helm. Check it.

That's some sexy work. It's a shame the full suit only got one moment of glory.

i know right...

Im betting its sitting in some prop warehouse somewhere never to be used again. Sucks, but money is money.

We have more suits that we just finished and that are coming down the pipe if there is any interest.

Not sure if its worth it though, these boards seem kinda dead.

It's totally worth it. There are a lot of lurkers that don't necessarily post. I know that I'd definitely be interested in seeing them.

I can back that statement up, I am a lurker. Trying to lurk less, post moar.

That armor is amazing and it looks like you got some good screen time in that commercial as well.

Cool. Pacification of the lurkers commencing.

This is what we are calling the flame dragon suit. Finishing touches are going on it today, and it will be shipped tomorrow morning.

So for the moment, its sitting on the workbench next to me.

Beautiful as always.

How much time do you spend patterning out for any given suit like that? Though I do a lot of tooling on my stuff, it's not really even in the same ballpark, but I find myself spending a significant chunk of any project playing with different patterns to get the look I'm going for.

First off, i am not prince. I just work with him, Just to clear that up real quick.

On the high end suits, he does all the patterning and i do a lot of the grunt work so to speak. On smaller commissions i do everything.

Generally speaking he spends a few days designing the tooling and general design. From the design he makes the patterns and then fits them to the measurements. I think he would take a week to do patterning on a full suit like that, and then start it the week after, but since im there, i usually show up in the morning and have a stack of patterns to cut out, tool, dye, sheen, etc etc.

So i would say probably a day per section of the body. I mean when it comes to the limbs, there are only so many ways you can cover that part of the body before it stops working, so patterns for those tend to go quicker than say a helm.

Beautiful work. How did you do the horns?

Re: Leather Fantasy Elven Knight Full Suit of Armor

The horns are actual horn.

We sanded them down on a belt sander till they were smooth. Progressively finer grits, then polished them.

They are attached to the leather via epoxy and stitching, and then the leather is riveted to the helm, the another piece goes around the whole thing to hide the rivets. They are pretty darn secure and don't wobble which is nice.

Not quite field legal unfortunately.
