New Bel Realm in Denver ?

Postby Crynolyn » Sun Dec 16, 2007 10:21 pm

Hey guys, would you like to help me brainstorm ? I'm thinking about calling it Minas Tirith, since it's a human city on the edge of Mordor ;) Dkini is interested in helping too. We're not going to bother with starting battles until the Spring weather though.

I also intend to create a Medieval combat club at my college. I already have a good number of kids interested in fighting.

Does anyone have good advice on creating a College combat group ?

Also, at what point can I create a website ? Do you think I should put one together prior to holding official battles ? I'm considering a MySpace page for an easy way to keep in touch with interested people.

Hey Cryn, I've been up in Fort Collins for a few months now going to school and should be around through spring if you need any other help getting this together. Transportation is an iffy one but I won't clog up the boards with that.

I think starting a website before spring would be a good idea to get the word out and offer somewhere for interested people to go.

I can't help with the whole college club part, but the name sounds pretty sweet. PM me if you need anything.

Kurgen, good to hear from you. Have you visited Mordor yet ? Right now we aren't meeting since there's about 8 inches of snow in the park. But if we get a warm Sunday...

I'll be moving to Denver in a few months.. so my days in Mordor are numbered.

Looks great. Especially for something to help draw them in early on.

Hey cryn, I'm starting a group at my college here in Akron and I came up with loads of ideas for going public and advertising.

First off, I would check to see if your school does a program for student organizations that gives you free advertising, funds, facilities, etc. I had no idea my school did anything like that until I looked into it, and all for merely signing some paperwork and promising not to discriminate against elves :-P

Second, make your practice site as public as possible. Get people curious. Have plenty of loaner weapons on hand of many varieties so noobies can jump straight into the action and get hooked right away.

Third, if your school has a Student Union or some centralized and frequented area on campus (libraries are a BAD choice) then set up a table/info booth there once a week or so and lay out some of your better looking weapons and garb. Have plenty of fliers on hand and lecture folks on what all the big squishy swords are for ;-)

I had an idea where I would walk around campus in full armor and hand out fliers, or maybe even carry weapons and go "fight-club" style by challenging people to a quick duel and letting them win to give them the impression that they would do good at the sport...

...also be sure to refer to it as a sport, and make it very well known that it is full-contact and NOT for wimps! This way of referencing has gotten the most success for me in getting those hard to lure types interested.

I really haven't put these to the test yet, but those are the ideas I came up with so far and I figure that in addition to more conventional methods (fliers, billboards), you'd gain alot of fighters by employing these.

A visitation from the ghost of Astrix past: Be careful before signing a club over to the college. My local realm is officially affiliated, and it seems that being so puts non-student fighters at a disadvantage. Yes, start-up funds look appealing, but it also means they own your game. It can be good and it can be bad. The further I take this the more I'm going to sound like a whiny emo, so I'll cut my losses here.

Actually Astrix, I'd prefer if you let me know the troubles you ran into. I mean its a little late for the realm I'm getting started to pull out from under the university, but it would definitely help to know what to look for in case some scheistery shenanigans go on.

What we did in our realm was create the student activity as an extension of a regional club open to the public. Non-students are considered "guests" of the student group during weekday practices on campus and weekend practices are in an off-campus location. Indoor evening practices are great for the student body.

yeah bohdi, we also had university group and community group. at one point we instituted a dues thing so that we could build a loaner stockpile. we built some clubs and bought some edhellen swords. they now belong to the university. non student moneys were put in and we get little back. no access to indoor practices, no rides in university vans. no more dues.
we have had people excommunicated by the university leadership. they have been informed that they will have the cops called on them if they show up to either of the 2 regularly scheduled practices. this is even though the practices are held in a public park off campus.
i guess what i would really stress is to choose your leadership wisely. i think many of our local problems are a result of leadership twisting the university's knife in our gut.
