Belegarth in Elgin, IA

Postby Kinmen » Wed Oct 08, 2008 6:06 am

I have begun to create a realm in Elgin, and I was wondering what I need to do to make it work? I mean people around here haven't even heard of belegarth.

I have been trying to get some of my friends to play,
but I'll I have really gotten is one person who says he'll play if there is more people.
He has even asked me "how do I make the weapons in your game."
And I told him I would print him out some instructions.

2 is better than one, and one more closer to 3, which is what you need to get started!

Honestly though, I know what you mean, it can be hard to find the people. I was doing belegarth for over a year before I actually got a realm going. For the longest time I felt like I couldn't find anybody (well other than my brother, which was also, though it didn't feel like it, a good start), all the people I thought would be crazy about the idea where like "ya, thats cool" but never showed more interest than that. It was kinda depressing.

My suggestion is this: make some swords, take them everywhere you go. Every chance you get, bring them out and spar some one. Just say, "you have to try this new game I found! Humor me." And if you just spar one round thats cool it is exposure. You are looking for potential interest. Some time others will walk up and say "Can I try?" some times, people will really get in to it. Even if they don't live close by get there info tell them "I am starting up a chapter where we will be doing this every week in the next few months, could I get your e-mail so I can let you know when we start?"

I did that, and after a year, I didn't have many, but I had some interest, usually from people I didn't expect. I was recruiting, though at the time I didn't realize it. Now that I realize that was what I was doing, I can do it will a lot more efficiency, I now have multiple dozens people interested all over my provence.

Inanna and Shi'nok live in Volga (for the time being). I vist family in the area one a realtivly regular basis. there are some younger people who are interested in the area, not to many but a few. If ou get plans started there is a potental for lots of people. I know that part of the state is a hard sell but its what you have to work with.

If you let me know how old you are I might beable to help more, also let me know what you thinking for getting a group started.

I am 15 years old, and the guy that wants to play is 19.
I was thinking about having the belegarth matchs at the local park.
The town that I am in is only about 5000 people at the most.
I will probly have to make all the weapons.

5k people is plenty! What is 10 out of 5,000? Not much. Also, yes, you will need to make the weapons to start, and eventually ween people in to getting there own.

you might have some help come next summer, but we aren't sure where shi'nok will be staying and inanna is probably moving out of volga. let me know if you need anything. All of the iowa realms are really good about helping new realms.

Well, yeah it is in a way. That's 0.2% which may not seem like alot when you're talking about 5000 people it becomes rather large when you're dealing with numbers like 1 million.

My realm should have over 772 people with no sweat without even adding in the suburbs or St. Paul.

Chicago should have over 5000.

Personally I think 2 people out of 5000 is pretty good, as a sport we have nowhere near that ratio.

I Think City is probable an overstament in north east Iowa there are towns with only two houses in it that they say have 2000 people, but I'm sure that as I get going more should join.

Sorry to bring this back up, but I am having trouble with membership. Me and my friend tried to get people to join but it seems like it is dead in the dust. Plus the fact we don't have the money for weapons or anything, we barely have garb.
Any one out there live near Elgin, Iowa that wants to help me out. Not counting the ones all the way in cedar falls. Thats alot of gas money.

Bring it up as often as needed, we all want to see you succeed.

Tell us the hole sad story to this point. Have you had any practices? Has anyone showed up at all? Where have they been? How many weapons do you have? Where and how have you promoted yourself?

And just to make sure I am looking at the right place on the map, this is you?:

I live just outside that town called clermont on Great river road. We have one weapon, and every time we have tried to have a practice we were too busy. I have tried promoting belegarth with posters at the local school where I go. They turned down the posters saying I can't post them. I have told people I know about it. Some took notice, and then gave up on it.

Ok, some questions first:

-So, you are closer to Clermont than you are to Elgin?

-Clermont looks to be bigger than Elgin, is it?

-Also, how big is West Union? It looks bigger than both Elgin and Clermont.

-How on earth do you practice with only one weapon?

-You have not had a practice yet, ad you have not put out any promotional material. Correct?

Answer these and we can start making up a plan of attack.

1. Yes
2. They're about the same size
3. West Union is bigger and has all the local stores
4. That's why we can't practice
5. I tried to put up posters and epicily failed, but I have tried to spread the word.

Build at least one more weapon, preferably a few. Get one friend (or more if you can, but only one is needed), and start fighting with each other in a park. Perhaps make a freestanding sign that says all are welcome.

Right, plan of action. Remember it might take a bit of patience to get things of the ground. I knew about belegarth for 1 hole year before I got our realm going. I think you can get it up much quicker then that with a bit of motivation though.

1. Ok, first and top priority, as Derian said. You have to build another weapon. At least one. I would aim for 3 more. But 2 is essential.

2. Practice location: West Union sounds like the place to be if you can manage it, but Claremont is right in-between the 2 so not to bad. Can you hold practice in West Union? What is the idea park to practice in?

3. Lets not promote ourselves to hard until you have something to promote, and a plan to do it well.

I want you to make a list for me a list of anywhere with community bulletin boards. This might include:
• Stores (usually in the entryway or near the doors)
• Local businesses
• Coffee shops
• Community, civic, and public buildings (like libraries, museums and community halls)
• Malls
And also, do you have this kind of mail box: Image ? Becouse the end of these are practically community bulletin boards.

Cib, the federal postal service in the U.S. is generally pretty picky about what can be placed in or on a mailbox. Depending on how strict they are in Kinmen's area, that may not be an option.

You would be surpised how much attention those crappy news paper articles get for basically no real cash. The free papers are a good place to start some of them only cost like 5 dollar a month, and if in 5 months you gain 1 member from it... it was worth the 25 bucks right?

Hello again, I have changed my ideas on how to actually get members and it will require some help from either Nan belegorn or some other close by realm. I have met with some of my colleges from ingawanis camp staff, and one of them said that they were one of the original founders of Nan belegorn. His name was Eric York. His Avatar I have no Idea. We discussed many ideas on how to get some interest going in my local area.

We both agreed would probable work was that an outside group of people from the area could come down and have a demonstration. To peak the interests of the local people. Then the possibility of a donation of a few weapons to people who want to play could continue after the demonstration. It sounds kind of tough to do, because of how things tend to work but it would peak the interest of the local population. I have also set up a facebook page so that more planning may be done there. the group is called
"Let's create a Belegarth group in Elgin,Clermont, or West Union, IA"

Even if you can't help by having a demonstration you can at least help guide me furthur with my plans on facebook. If we were to have a demonstration there would be steps to be taken before hand.
That is all I have to report on my situation in small town Ia
:edit: I now have for inventory one club, and two medium rocks.

That's really great that you ran into Eric! He's a good guy and should be able to give you good general advice. If you can set up a time with enough advance notice, and can gurentee us there will be at least a handful of participants, Tir Asleen and/or Nan Belegorn would be happy to come and fight with you guys for an afternoon or put on demonstrations if that is more useful. I have some Eriador kingdom funds left that could be put to use making you some loaner weapons as well.

Thanks, Updates on status:
Chetan Nan will probable have it's practices at the farm park. It is this sort of community ran little organization that has a lot of land. It is right by Montauk which is on Highway 18 outside of Clermont.
I have 4 swords and a club, several rocks.
I have several people saying they will try belegarth out once it gets going. In the spring we might hold an Event to celebrate the realm coming together all our invited if it happens. The Farm Park may dicide on a small cost for coming in though.
For those who have been trying to talk to me on the facebook page I have not been able to get to it lately for the place where I use the internet has blocked it.
That's all.
