*: HACS Larp?

Postby Sir Cairbre » Tue May 29, 2007 6:56 am

Has anyone read the HACS site since they went up? Is Hacs now a larp.

If so BOOOOOOO.

HACS Legends writes, casts, and produces interactive games offering participants a totally new experience of entertainment, and an optical sensation. Interactive games are also known as Live RPG, Live Games, and Live Action Role Play games.

HACS Legends produces high quality Live RPG (LARP) Conventions and related publications based upon legendary heroes and villains.

HACS Legends Mission: We will redefine the way in which live adventure games are seen in North America. We will produce high quality Live RPG Events and related publications based upon legendary heroes and villains. We will offer our members well-balanced Live RPG events, an equal opportunity to be entertained, and a game atmosphere that is both challenging and fun, regardless of whether an individual prefers adventure, combat, politicking, mercantile, economic, physical, role-playing, or mental challenges. We will offer volunteers fair compensation for their time, effort and resources spent in support of our society.

HACS Live RPG events last from a few hours to entire weekends and take place at game conventions, local parks, and/or campground-like facilities depending upon the type of event being produced. The facility or campground is decorated like movie sets to resemble a medieval city or other fantasy world. Writers act as the “Game Masters” who’ve created storylines with mysteries to be solved and tasks to be completed. They provide the direction for “Event Actors” who interact with the participants, guiding them through the storyline and giving them hints and clues to the mysteries. Participants live the adventurous life, creating a fictional character using the HACS Legends Rule Book©, and playing that character for the event - solving puzzles, battling monsters, and being a part of our fantasy society. Players may also, as an option, engage in battles with mythological creatures like Goblins, Trolls, and Ogres using realistic looking foam weaponry.

Seriously, I thought that HACS was spossed to get rid of almost all RP and strictly focus on fighting...

If I remember correctly, HACS will have a few different producted. HACS Legend is suppose to be NERO while HACS Sport is what most of us will be interested in. HACS Legend seems to be the most developed product at the moment though.

But in the larp aspect will it still be heavy hitting, or just tap fighting like most larps in this country?

the hacs store is selling larp weapons, so I guess it's a tap fighting game.

id play a Full contact Larp like darkon, i played nero/solar etc for 12 years, but i havent been able to go back since i found full contact fighting here, id unwittingly shieldbash and fullspeed coresmack someone into a bruising or worse.... bad idea.....

make it full contact larp, that could be * intense run properly.

as long as i can wail on people with foam.

If it's a full contact larp, then it is Darkon, Dagorhir, Amtgard or Belegarth, not NERO or other wrist-flick tap games.

Is HACS Legends now NERO, or vice versa?

I see Edhellen gear (most of it doesn't even pass as NERO legal, which makes that particularly interesting) on the NERO site, and a "NERO annual membership" seems to also buy you a HACS membership. Did someone purchase someone else?

HACS is working with NERO I believe. The latex Edhellen weapons are legal in most NERO chapters. I know they where approved by the owner of NERO.

My bad, I knew that, sorry for being unclear. I saw Belegarth flails, javs, glaives, etc. also on sale at the NERO site. Maybe just a glitch with trying to synchronize online shopping carts.

I would totally act at an event too. Fighting or no. I'd love it. Seriously.

Also, I believe it is in all of the HACS literature I've read that it will be a multi-faceted organization. Featuring separate entities providing competitions, historical reenactments, and larping.

LIGHTNING BOLT!

Seriously though, the Convention Quest thing sounds kindof cool if it takes both HACS Sport and HACS Legends. It could be very interesting, and it seems like everybody in the HACS organization is striving to do everything right, so hopefully it's awesome.

We hosted a Dag weekend event (about 70 peeps) where we all tried to roleplay 24/7 ("in character"). Admittedly, there were some tough times (most of us were entirely new to the whole idea of role playing WHILE kicking butt), but the roleplay definately enhanced the fighting and made it WAY more intense and brutal than normal Dag fighting.

People usually act like you CAN'T have hardcore combat if you're RPing, but to us it seemed like their was some massive syngergies, one fed into the other.

Convention Quest may be of a similar nature, but much bigger? Sounds interesting.

I do think most people are wayyy to apprehensive/uptight about the idea of RP while fighting or RP in general.

Their is a fine line between using unit tactics and actually assuming the persona and ranks of your character. If I am a knight with a squire, and we go to an event, I will make * sure he is fighting next to me at all times. Why? Because that is appropriate in character and it makes sense out of character.

I think it would add a lot more to the game if people actually RP'd a little more on the field. Look at the SCA videos where people actually fall when they die. *gasp* what a concept!

A full contact LARP would be fun.

On thing I have always said is that if you had something to fight for at an event, it would make the fighting that much better. Whether it be, defending the castle, or attacking the castle, you have a goal in mind while you attacking/defending. This is what LARP's do for folks it gives them a sense of purpose for the fighting. I would love to go to an event where I had to speak in a Scottish accent all day and night, and we had a goal of stopping the Romans from advancing their line and taking out camp.

I do love the idea of a full contact LARP...sounds like a blast!

There are 5 pillars in HACS:

HACS Sport (Combat): This is the heavy contact, heavy hitting sport section. HACS Sport has 5 levels of combat. This section is dedicated to tournaments both individual and team based.

HACS Performance: This is the section dedicated to demonstrations.

HACS Education: This is the section focused on the educational aspects of medieval reinactment.

HACS Reinactment: This is the section focused on historical aspect of medieval reinactment.

HACS Legends: This section is working with NERO to provide scenarios and events that are role playing in nature. (I am not involved with this area, so I can not comment with complete accuracy on the level of contact involved. I believe that HACS legends will be run at Class III combat rules, which are essentially Dag/Bel level of combat.)

Oh I agree sometimes it just isn't safe. I merely am suggesting with a bit of sarcasm that we all could/should RP more on the field. Everyone has room for improvement and I do not think that people should scoff at the idea of RP on the field. It makes sense. If that means falling when you die because its safe do it. If that means communicating with your unit in a specific way on the field thats good too.

* Georghiu -- I'm with ya, trying to imrove my "falling over" as well... there's no 'head stomping' risk during most wide open field battles, but most people just transform into Treefolk with some excellent sword-balancing skillz when they die. :D

NERO, HACS Legends, and Wildlands West Questions

Postby jvalentinero » Mon Jun 04, 2007 8:40 pm

Hi All:

I will try to answer all of your questions regarding NERO and HACS, and may be able to help with Wildlands West inquireis too though they are 'based on the nero rules', not quite a NERO Chapter (that all run the same rules set countrywide).

Belegarth Weaponry on the NERO LARP site

Postby jvalentinero » Mon Jun 04, 2007 8:46 pm

Why is there Full Contact Foam Weapons on NERO LARP Store?

NERO is encouraging its members and NERO Chapters to move away from Boffer Swords, and utilize only Foam Sculpted Weapons (also called LAtex weapons). We have a way to go, but we see the future and it does not include boffer weaponry.

Belegarth Weaponry has been placed on the NERO LARP site because the weaponry is superior to the old-style boffer weapons, and it makes total sense for all NERO members to use these full contact, heavy duty, incredibly well made, really durable weapons as our practice weaponry.

The Foam Sculpted Weapons cost a good amount, and we do not want to use the weapons that add coolness to the game, that make us look really cool, when practicing, as it would really suck if we ruined an expensive realistic and cool looking foam sculpted weapon during practice.

Is HACS Legends NERO and Vice Versa

Postby jvalentinero » Mon Jun 04, 2007 9:06 pm

Is HACS Legends NERO and Vice Versa?

NERO and HACS are two totally different companies, but we run similar types of events, no matter what we call them.

We will be running HACS tournaments at NERO Chapters Events across north America. Since NERO already runs Sword Fighting Tournaments, and has Nationwide Insurance Coverage for its events, there is no reason to double-charge people for Memberships when we can recipricate (spelling?) benefits to our members in cross promotion agreement.

I will need to go read more about HACS Sport, but it is my understanding that Belegarth Clubs will be asked to host a Tournament every weekend at thier weekly club meetings, so that each person can acquire tournament standings nationwide to be ranked against everyone else. To do this, Members at each of the Clubs will need to step up and become certified to run tournaments, and HACS will track those tournaments in a master database so interested parties and members/warriors can find a place where tournaments are running, and members can login to view thier current standings against members worldwide.
