Where do I find Amtgard(how ever it is spelled)

Postby Outhro Youkker » Wed Feb 13, 2008 10:03 pm

So, I was suggested to look into it and maybe make a field herein Puerto Rico. I need to first find it and understand it before I can agree or decline the idea.
Where can I find Amtguard?
How do I find the main site to find the information I seek?

No offense, but have you actually played Amtgard?

Also, this forum is for the discussion of other medieval sports. If that's what he's interested in, to each his own.

outhro, hey just throwing it out here... why not start a belegarth realm in Puerto Rico?

there is not many differences between belegarth and amtgard...
magic, armor, damage and class systems
being the majors noted...
other than that the fighting is the same...concepts are the same...

as a fighter of both i know this first hand

The Bel fighters that I know who fight the hardest and hit the best are old-hand Amtgard fighters.

I also know a lot of gay people I like better than you, Solusar.

All I was trying to say is there's a Dag group he can fight with. I'd rather be in a boffer sport than a LARP. I know a lot of people have had good experiences with Amtgard, but I know way more people that have bad things to say about it. That's why they converted. I mean, a tap fighting game, come on.
But to each his own, like you said.

Some of the best sword/board fighters I've learned from came from Amtgard. Most of their shots work in our game. If you can, fight in as many games as you can...or learn from them.

There's an Amtgard group just a few minutes south of me, and I've gone to there practices many a time to pick up tricks. We even have a cross over fighter who comes to our events. They've been great to learn shield blocking and speed tricks from. I personally think their little battle games with magic is silly and some of them think that we just run each other over and swing wildly. We each have our reasons to do which version of combat we like.

Get on the electric samurai and ask if there are any people to contact in PR. There's a pretty wide network of people there from all over the world that can probably point you in the right direction.

Not to get on too much of a tangent, but I find this pretty funny coming from someone who is apparently creating armor to help him better pretend to be a dark elf. The Amtgard Rules of Play never once describes Amtgard as a LARP, and only mentions role-playing three times. And that's all I'm gonna say about that.

That's a **** sick burn. Need some Bactine?

If I had the money I'd miss Spring Wars this year for Sword Knight Boot Camp. Show me a belegarth event that focuses on classes and sparring to become a better fighter. Some of the best fighting instruction I've gotten came from mere videos of this event, better than A LOT of what I've been taught from bel fighters.

The Wyvern Clan is the reason I went off to start making my own unit. The leader is a ________________ and he is screwing the whole game for everyone. out of almost 40 fighters, 6 have quit completely fighting, and almost all others that fight are in different units and dont want him to visit.
He wants everyone to be a subunit of his, I said I am going to make a Goblin Unit that is 2-3 towns away from Wyvern clan, and it will be a UNIT and not his subunit. His reply was banning me and any others that fight with me from the next 2 realm events. (This was back in early december, He has yet to make a realm event)

My Goblin Unit is going to be both Belegarth and Dagorhir.

I practice Belegarth with the Corsairs of Umbar. Every saturday, 3 pirates and a Goblin fight on a field, and any foam fighter is invited.
Durring the week, I can show up to fight at any of the 2 practices the university group in their Dagorhir unit.

The reason I am asking for Amtgard is to read and understand it.
If I know and understand it, I know what will be the best choice and best questions to ask.
That is why when I knew more than the "Leader" of the Wyvern Clan, he didnt like that I was making my weapons and shield on my own without his help and finding out info about making leather and chainmail armor and not asking him first.
HE DOESNT BELIEVE IN SHIELD KICKING!!!
I am waiting for the day that I can fight that "leader" on a field and he is in full garb, so that I can remove my belt and my bracer. Then it will be legal for me to Body check, grapple, and/or shield kick in no particular order.

The Wyvern Clan UNIT is COMPLETELY out of the question here. Especialy because the leader is made of marshmallow and many rules he has omited to tell his fighters. He doesnt like hard hits and his lovetaps of swordplay foreplay are to be counted as hits.

I have read and learned almost all the rules of Belegarth and Dagorhir. There are just some details that still have not been sunken in, because I have not seen them in practice yet.

Now, I am just researching at this point. I have not choosen to make one. I just want to know right now.

I've never personally met the guy, but if he's a giant * then I understand your desire to find another group.

PS: I've had worse burns, gimme something better. And I'm not making armor to look more like a Drow. My kit looks more orc/goblin then anything.

I am not looking for another group, my goal is making my own and having the lost fighters that he scared off, continue fighting out of his reach.
Plus with the idea of being both Bele and Dag, if he shows up at any time at the practice, I will hold out the Belegarth waiver for him to fill out. If he says that he is visiting the Dagohir group, we tell him it is Belegarth Practice and he missed the Dag practice that was the first 2 hours here. Because at no point I am kicking him out of the field. I will offer him the right of sitting on the side and being a spectator.

Now, I finaly got a login to Electric Samurai and I am going to begin my search for their Big Book o' Rules.
Thanks for the links.

Hey Drow kid,

We'll have 50-60 some Amtgardians at Ragnarok this year in our camp alone. Toss in those coming from other parts of the country and you'll have a very wide variety to pick from to test your theories.

We'll also be at Belegarth's Beltain and Equinox. We enjoy cross-gaming and hope to have as much fun as possible, drinking and fighting and so on with fighters from all games. Even drow, goblins, orcs, and elves! Don't forget your pointy ears LARP-boy. See ya in June!

On a serious note for the guy who asked about Amtgard, here are some links for more of the flurb-tastic side of Amtgard. You can do whatever you like with these and make a game suited to about any scenario you can think of...

Rules of Play: The 7.2 edition. Standard full rules for Amtgard. Basic combat, militia battles, class battles, magic, etc. etc.

I read more than half of the Rules of play over 7 hours ago., and I have to say... Extensive rules for a very detailed game.
When I saw that a goblin dies by losing a limb and are 0.5 lives, I felt that I will be the reacurring flanker. :goblin: :D

I have quite a bit to read

Yeah, POP goblins are tons of fun. The rules are extensive and detailed, but if you look at it more as like Gurps or something, you'll have a better understanding of what the game really is. At it's core its simple foam tag. Toss on armor and arrows and you can do historical militia games (almost identical rules of Belegarth/Dagorhir without the bashing and checking). Toss on classes and magic and you can do fantasy battles. Add in monsters and special terrain rules and you can really do some specific battle games that will really represent the designers concept well.

Honestly, I havn't paid attention to any of the class rules since 6th edition was out. I'm not a big fan of full class battle games but sometimes if the right person is running them, they are awesome. This year at Clan, Sir Brennon is doing some nifty ones that are full class that have my interest.

"Orcish Incursion" Full Class Battlegame
based on the sacking of Clusium
by the Gauls http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clusium

"Orcs At the Border" Full Class Battlegame
based on the Battle of Allia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Allia

"Redeemed By Steel" Full Class Battlegame
based on Marcus Furius Camillus defense of Rome http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Allia

Lotta orcs and romans this year. Hope that gives you an idea of how we use our classes and magic and monsters. It's not so much a live action D&D game as it is a big real time strategy war game with fantasy elements. I think of it like the old Warcraft games.

There really should be a definition within the LARP world to seperate LARPS that do Battle Games and LARPS that do Role-Playing games. All of the Dagorhir off shoots are Battle games and all of the NEROish offshoots are RP games.

Thanks for the help :D

I will find time durring the week to sit and read it at my pace. I know a few people that would probably be more interested in Amtgard, because they dont like the lacking of magic and how all armor is the same as in Belegarth and Dagorhir.
I can always sit and delegate with some friends who would prefer WoW than just the buffer fighting.

I wount set up the realm and field of Amtguard, but I can always try to direct the correct people into making it. 8)

I have a few things to say about Amtgard. I started foam-fighting with Amtgard, and, as Jimmy said, I received a lot of my formal fighting training there. I have met some pretty bad-ass fighters coming from there as well, and the truth is that you can't compare the games, since they are different. Looking at it from a stick-jock's POV, it's not going to be. But if you take into account all the skills and abilities that your class has at it's disposal, and add in the unmatched speed of fighting with ultra-lights along with the possibility of up to 6 points (or more if you're good) of armor, and you get a whole different kind of game imo. But yea, Amtgard ftw! ^_^

No discussing of Wyvern Clan here, because it will just make me complain ALOT :goblin:
Plus if he shows up, I will force feed him his Grifones

Now, I finaly got quite a few replies of Electric Samurai, and they want me to make an Amtguard field, most want to passby and go to the Bacardi Rum Factory.
I learn best by example, and for me to start from scratch, I need a few more people to group up with me and learn all the rules so that we can watch eachother and fix if something happens wrong. :(
Starting from scratch will be harder, because with atleast 2 people who are experienced, you can watch and follow along.

Best choice for myself is Barbarian.
Now that I know where I will be starting, I now can now introduce Amtgard to those who I know will make the best of it.

That's true. Now, if I can just make some Bel Swords, I won't have to blind you with those sword/shield covers (can't beat lightsaber green and orange on the 1$/yd table for the sheer annoyance factor)

Hmm, I can't seem to post the images, probably due to my noobery foiling everything I do, even when done right. So just imagine a raver jacked up on speed hitting you with super-bright padded glowsticks. Actually, that's a pretty accurate description of the average Amtgard ditch monkey :/

BAH!! I was using the html code. But no worries, I explained it to him today, and I think he agreed that those kinds of weapons may be illegal in some states.

Heh, in Amtgard I use the black and white checkerboard cotton fabric sold at Walmart. There are even some varieties of it the is more like a grid of thick lines on white, with the lines being gray and then black where they intersect with another line.

Distorts the silhouette of the sword a little, makes some people not want to look at it. Obie's swords have a similar feel, but it makes me just want to kill him faster so I don't have to look at em.

Odd stripe patterns also work well on punch shields, especially if you rotate them a lot. Very disturbing. A similar sword trick is to make white or cream covers, then paint the top 6 inches something like black or gray. It makes the weapon seem shorter as well as the tip being nearly invisible at night.

What were we talking about again?

interesting how mind distortion by visuals interaction by optical illusions on a weapon are pottent.
Maybe i will just start wearing a shorter kilt to do the same :goblin:

* that plan, I am more savage in the fight and will verbaly mess with someone than make a weapon do what I do best.

Giving headaches by the patterns on the weapons. The optical illusions make your eyes send so many mixed messages to your brain that your thought process slows down and your reaction time is screwed as a headache brews.

Plus if the patern is screwy enough and is fast enought in front of the fighters eyes and they have the conditions for it, they could have a seasure*
