SCA/EMP helmets

I'm finally getting my SCA **** together.
I have 5 "Barbute" type helmets that I'm building. I bought them all at once from Rough from the Hammer a few years ago. They are about halfway shaped. This is the late period T slot type helm, like Magneto's in the comics(not the movie).
I'm getting ready to do the eye-slot area and have some questions.
What are the rules difference in this(eye-slot) area between SCA and EMP? Am I gonna be albe to use the same helm for both? What do I have to do to make that so?
And the BIG question: anybody got pic's of the different things I could do with these? I want them to be #1 Safe, #2 scary looking and #3 Safe. Notice "period" isn't on the list. Since I plan to be my usual self, I'm not worried about period.
Thanks

I just went through the EMP armor regulations and they're similar to SCA's. If you make your helm to SCA specification, they it should be acceptable with EMP.

Sweet. Thanks Fang.
I would really like to use the same kit for everything I do. I've already reinforced the soft spots in my Bel armor. I know our local SCA people don't really like it, but I don't care. It looks bad *.
I run into the SCA folks at the fairs and stuff around here and they have their local wars at our Ren Fair site alot. I don't want to "join" up with them. I just want to able to fight everyone I can before I'm too old and broken. I figure I need my own equipment to do it right. I hate borrowing ****.
I'm gonna start banging on the helmets today after work.

also remember fork that here in Artemesia, you must be authorized to fight at any event, that also means you have to pay your dues to get authorized. Don't want you showing up and being told you cant fight with me :) Maybe team hug will make an SCA apearence. Can't wait to get you out playing SCA with us!

I plan to become authorized and everything, so, yes I'll be a member.
I was refering to my not wanting to adopt an historicly accurate SCA persona.
I'm going to be my regular old Forky self.
I'm really just doing this so we can beat up stranger TOGETHER for a change, Cedric.
I wanna be on your team, baby.

I have the first helm done. I'll try to put up pic's this week.
I'd really like to see some pic's of peoples helmet padding. I have some good idea about how I'm gonna do it, but I'd like to see as many different ways to do it as possible before I start.
Also, what do y'all think about chin straps. I'm thinking about the ones they use in football hemets
I'm going to try to get some pic's of my other SCA stuff that's in-process. I'd like your oppinions on that also.

**** fantastic, tvetree; cool find.

Yeah, the craptastic loaner gear I'm fighting in has a layer of blue foam as the only helmet padding. I'm still alive.

Most sca helms are padded with blue or green camp pad foam.I've seen a few that use split pipe insulation (the black stuff).

Mine is also, going to try and do the new helm up right though.

I've got a pict of a great chin strap set up but can't post it.I was going to e mail it but the addys arnt in the profiles.

Nice find, man.
Although I'm a big history fan, That looks hot as hell. I'm going into this for sport mainly, and I ain't cooking my bean in an oven like that. I think I'm going to go for Evalite glued into the helm and a Under armor head sock for my locks.
I'd like to see the way some more sports oriented people have padded their helms.
I figure I'll cover the whole inside, them put in strips like a football helmet, but I don't know yet.

The cloth liner will feel better and stay cooler than a foam liner.Simular to steel plates being cooler than plastic.

I use Skydex padding which is the velcro insert padding for the new Army Ballistic Helmet. Simple to put in, take out and clean, and waaaay more comfortable. It's actually affordable. Google search it or look for it on a site like Ranger Joes or US Cav.

here is the website with the armor standards for the sca your kingdom might have stricter standards so you will want to check their website
http://www.sca.org/officers/marshal/doc ... ndbook.pdf
the eye slot is what you will have to watch when constructing those helms 1" maximum is the rule to be safe I always make mine 7/8" in case a bar gets bent.
here is a good general info sca site

I'm making all the slots 7/8". I made a cool spacer to keep everything straight and exactly 7/8 whitle I weld it all together.
First I cut the face hole(haha) to size and then I take 1/8x1" flat bar and frame the hole. I punch holes in the flat bar and plug weld in on, wedld the seams and then grind it all smooth. I then weld the inside edge all the way around. It looks seamless in the end. It's not really period, but it looks very slick and cool. I'm also puting 1/4" round bar down the midde of the face hole for extra prtection .
Ill try to really get soem pics up this weekend.

Forkbeard,

I found this thread on Armour Archive talking about perforated faceplates. They're not period but they're definitely spiffy:

Those grills are sick. I've been thining about doing some thing like that over the front of the barbute.
I also really like this:

The guy who made it live in Boise and Jeggrim has been working with him a little.
I want a Uruk Skull grill like nothing else. Hopefully I can combine these two ideas into somethin evil.
