Cross-Game Event Labor Day Weekend 2009

Postby Brennon EH » Fri Dec 19, 2008 3:56 pm

What: First Annual Lord of War Festival
When: 9-3-2009 through 9-7-2009 (Labor Day Weekend)
Where: Location to be determined. Will be either St. Louis or Chicago.

Goal: To provide a common framework for Amtgard, Belegarth, and Dagorhir fighters to enjoy a weekend of intense fighting.

I think we (Amt/Bel/Dag) have made some really excellent steps towards cross-gaming and understanding each other over the last several years. Many of us have had an excellent opportunity to meet new people, enjoy new experiences, and be introduced to new concepts by participating in the other sports. It is, I think, the right time to start a new tradition of all the foam sports coming together to celebrate our common interests and enjoy friendly competition and camaraderie.

For this event we will be using a simplified hybrid system for combat very similar to Belegarth. Specific rules will be available as they are firmed up, but basic highlights are as follows:
1. Sufficient force will be in effect, and orientation on what that means will be run so that there is a clear understanding of what that means.
2. Weight minimums will not be in effect for equipment so that everybody may use their own gear.
3. Grappling will be allowed for gear, but not for people.
4. Bashing and kicking will be allowed.
5. All damage is created equal (no difference between stab/pierce/slash)
6. No headshots count, including projectiles

I am really looking forward to seeing a lot of you there, and am very excited about bringing a new level of communication and cross-promotion to all of our societies. Working together we can accomplish so much more than working separately.

Please feel free to post here with any questions or comments you have. More information will be made available in the following months. We should have our site selection finalized by the end of January.

If you are interested in being the contact person for organizing your group to attend, please drop me a PM. I'll be working with those parties to keep everybody up-to-date and iron out any questions or concerns that may arise.

Thanks,
Brennon

This is officially on my radar. I've never been to St Louis (although it plays a significant role in one of my happiest memories--when the Red Sox beat them in 2004) so it might be a nice trip. And my birthday is on the 26th, so it could be a fun excursion with some buddies.

Plan ahead, and get everyone you know to go in Ohio. I personally think Chicago is the best spot, but the Southerners would probably appreciate St. Louis a bit more. It's the same for me, because I have to go through Bears country regardless.

I was thinking the same thing, Kegg land would be a great site.... but it's a bit far north, and honestly it's kind of a hike to the airport (1 hour and 15 minutes or so.)

""guess im not arching then....""

In Darkon projectiles are not head legal, it's still great to arch... it wont ruin your good time, promise!

I would so love to go to an event like this... I actually consider the 2 crossover events the Aratari (dag) and Darkon did in '99 one of the biggest reasons for why I'm so into playing any game I can... This is a great idea! Good luck.

They're still part of Dagorhir. Big as ever. But Dag is sort of close minded and won't do an crossover event anymore, which sucks. It's not fair to their fighters.

a. Thanks! I like my tag.

b. Yes, back when Rome was still in Darkon as well as Dagorhir (Aratari chapter), (before a big personal falling out) they helped organize 2 crossover events, Summer War 99 or something which was a weekend long campout that was just freaking awsome for a newbie like me. It's where I met a bunch of the people that made me want to play dag and bel and any other game I can hit people in. And a regular day event later that winter. Since that falling out, the Aratari have not been interested in crossover events, which they have every right to do. Darkon did a crossover event with Angaron a few years ago in western Maryland, it was very nice, and a good time was had by all. I would not say that all of Dag doesn't do crossover events, it's up to the individual chapters to do what they want to grow their events, it just won't have the entire game's name on it. No big deal, nothing against any game, one chapter doesn't want to do crossovers, others do.

c. I am a viking.

e. Is your unit Frostbrew a viking/barbarian type thing? If so, I take that as a compliment sir!

I would love to go to this event.
Any more news about where??
I vote for St. Louis, for several reasons

Yes one being I am closer 2 StL. Plus I would venture to guess that people like me, Peter the quick, Frosty, and those who are from Arnor. Would like to be able to go to an event and not have to drive a min of 3 hours. I really like the place up north, but considering a lot of events have been moved up there it is expensive to drive in gas money, and it would as expressed previously be nice to have one in my backward so to say.

Also, it could help draw in more attention in the St. Louis area. I would like some of my non com family members to come for example, and see what a good sized event is like. They have seen me and my stuff, but have no other interaction with a fighter, and they scoff at the idea of driving 3 hours to do something they think is weird.

No not all Dag realms are against working with Bel fighters. We have had several Dag fighters come to our practices and events. From what I can think of atleast 4 different realms.

This sounds like a lot of fun and I hope it comes about successfully :)
Keep me posted please.

I know they are not from Arnor, especially Frosty he's from the second capital of Illinois originally. (Insert History Lesson)
What I said was
Atilano wrote:that people like me, Peter the quick, Frosty, and those who are from Arnor. Would like to be able to go to an event and not have to drive a min of 3 hours. .

Meaning people like me, Peter, and Frosty, who are from Southern Ill.
In addition to the members Arnor, who are from St. Louis.
Which is what I said originally in less words.

Also back on the place topic, I do love Chicago. Especially the food nothing beats a Chicago Hot Dog, or my personal fav Giordano's pizza yummm yummm :D

But since this year started it seems like all of the multi day events that were in Illinois were moved to Kegg land. Which is fine, and I have had fun up there. Since everything moved it made it a bit more difficult for the rest of us.
Let me put in a different way. Lets say that all of the events were moved to Carbondale, Il. Many of you would still go, but it would be more difficult Yes or No?
Why do all of the multi-day events in IL need to be moved to the North?

Because there's no where else to have them.

Oktoberfest moved because it's Numenor's event and Kegg has a large hand in running it, I imagine.

Spring Wars moved because Hidden Springs is permanently closed, Wolf Creek (maybe? Something like that) is also closed, and Forrest Glen doesn't open that early.

your upset about 3 hours. Get over yourself, that's not even a drive to events. That's a short day trip. Drive to chaos then talk to me.

QFT!

From Stygia every event we got to is over 4 hours away, except our own, which generally takes at least a 1/2 hour to drive to, usually more like an hour though.

I drive 3 hours for single day events, and until this last year all events were at least 4 hours away, forest glen was 5. Things have flip flopped, get over it.

Some Utah guys (can't remember exactly who...) drove over 24 hours to WPO last year. *.

Anyone from out West used to drive over 24 hours to get to Ragnarok. Back in those days we always held "Pre-Rag" in Numenor on the Saturday before it started. That gave the Western folks a chance to get a nights sleep before making the final trek to the event. Those guys were (are) truly "hard-core" when it came (comes) to travel and have my complete respect.

For what it's worth, before I got married I made it to a Chaos Wars. I drove for somewhere in the vicinity of 26 hours straight, with a whopping 30 minutes of sleep. I did it ONCE. Most of those guys who are "old-school" have done it a plethora of times. That in my opinion is totally badass.

I've been out to Chaos War twice, 8 & 9. Flying is definitely the way to go on that one! :)

The merits of St. Louis shouldn't be overlooked. It is also a big city like Chicago and would have similar offerings. Also, it is further West (though only notably so), and further South, which could encourage participation from more far-flung realms.

Especially given Pizza's aversion to anything to do with Kegg, St. Louis would be extremely valuable as neutral turf.

St. Louis is sexy.

Something to remember is that those from Dagorhir that will come, will come no matter where it is. Those that have a problem with Kegg won't come anyway no matter where it is. As much as I would like it to be in my back yard, I think that it is best done at Keggland near Chicago. This is the epicenter of Belegarth in the east of the Mississippi and with the site run by swordfighters, I don't think you can go wrong.

I will be coming to this event myself, and I hope that all of you will as well.

Plus, parks you can fight at aren't easy to come by. There's only 2 in IL now, as far as I know. No one has mentioned a park near St. Louis that would work. Plus, just a park where we CAN fight isn't enough, they have to let us.
