A Foamfighting Atlas

So. Dag apparently put out a Google Earth file (.kmz) as a map of all the official Dag Chapters, lots of the Units, and several of the Events. Derian has done one hell of a job keeping our GoogleMap of Bel Realms up to date. So, being the cross-sporter I am, I wanted a map that showed me everywhere there was to fight our style of combat. So I downloaded Google Earth, opened Derian's Map of the Realms in it, added in Dag's Chapter Map, and saved it.

For your enjoyment, here's the current edition of the Bel/Dag Foamfighter's Atlas.

Remember to Uncheck the little box near the download.

Feel free to rehost this file. It's the Jan 09 edition. I may be updating it periodically.

You know what would be slick, if you added in Amtgard too.

Do you know if Amtgard has a similar map? I want to add them in, I just don't know where their information would be and would megaprefer not to have to add each group by hand.

Anyone else who would like to do some maintenance work on this file is welcome to, by the way!

Now, if they'd actually made a searchable User-Created GoogleMap, then I could just DL it and integrate it. But no, they coded all the place markers directly into the page. *sigh* I guess sometime when I feel like not studying for Quals (always?) I'll figure out how to put that code into GoogleEarth.

Thats really cool. I like how this forum has started to developed as a place where all groups can come and let people kno whats going on. It means we get more traffic and we exposure.

Not just that, but both our group and the other groups will develop & evolve faster.

This is a good thing.

Guess this is a good time to say I've been doing a way better version of the Google Earth file Lykos uploaded. Mine is in Google Map and has every realm/unit/chapter, when/where they practice, websites and contact info and I'm putting up event sites as well. Feel free to convert it to Google Earth if you want, but I really think using Google Maps is so much more useful.
Here's my map so far: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=118350934471224883005.0004605e4584cd630a782&z=4
Any suggestions you guys have for me are more than welcome as I still have a LOT of information to add to mine.

Nice work Arrakis, Solusar, it's kind of funny. Before I knew about Belegarth and Dagorhir, I put together a map of Wisconsin, and found "holes" where Amtgard should expand to. Two years ago, I did some research and found that nearly every hole already had some sort of medieval or fantasy combat thing going on. One Dag park, three Bel parks, five Amt startups, three established Amt parks, one Darkon-style realm, eleven SCA groups, one ARMA group, one unaffiliated boffer game, two Nero-type Larps, one IFGS group, one LOTR inspired tag game, three ren fests, and five gaming conventions. Who knew?

Yeah, Bangor, I've sort of seen that effect myself (though not to anywhere near the scale you mentioned!) up here in the Northeast. There's ONE Dag Realm for MA, CT, RI, and VT, at least, and, though there's another Chapter at the far end of New York from CT, there are even units of Anvard in NY!

BUT. There're six Baronies of the SCA (EAST KINGDOM, WHAT!) in CT alone, piles of NERO (where it got its start, after all), The Realms, Quest, Vampire, Changeling, and various other regional/minor LARP games.

Medieval Recreation will find a way!

I suppose most people who will be fighting in the MD/DC/VA corridor already have their schedule... But you could include the 26 annual Darkon events on there, as we are the other full contact game out there. I mean, if anyone were actually to use these maps to be like "gosh, I'm gonna be in this area on this date, wonder where I can hit people..." then putting a full contact, by-weekly game with hundreds of people on there would seem wise, if you are already gonna include lighter combat like Amptgard... Just a thought.

Well, then, link us to a GoogleMap/Earth file of their schedule/locations.

We're laaaazzy.

Damnit. My ineptness with anything this side of heavy metal, swords, firearms and motorcycles knows no bounds. The best I can do is link to the event schedule http://www.darkon.org/events.html . I would love to help with a large clickable map of fighting in the USA, but alas, I know not how to do much more than surf the web with these * machines.... Sorry. I applaud all of your efforts though!

Just in case anybody's still interested, I'm working with this for a GIS project, because my professor has a sense of humor. Gaurunteed minimum finished project is a list of all Amtgard parks and their lat/long readings, grouped by Kingdom. That's half the work of getting an Amt .kmz put together. I may end up creating it the rest of the way myself, but that's kinda iffy (depends on my free time). If anybody wants to take a crack at it, I'll send you my files when I'm done.

I'll post again when I have whatever finished product I'm going with.

Actually, there's four Dagorhir chapters in New York, and in other areas Anvard would be a spray of chapters instead of just one. I'm trying to use that same geographically spread units thing here in NorCal (and cooperating with the local Belegarth peeps for more fun).

Apparently Alric is going to update Dagorhir's map (and the Chapter's page) circa January, so you may want to drop him a line to see if you can glom onto a copy of the Google Earth file.

I find it funny Alric has to choose which map to use: mine, Arrakis' or Lykos' **** map. I vote for Arrakis or mine.

I prefer a map I can see my chapter on, so with Arrakis' link in the original post down, yours wins. Honestly, I'd love to see something that shows chapters, another that shows events and unit practices (or a blend of the two). At least, that latter is what I'm assuming your is showing. For widespread groups, like I'm trying to make my thing be, a single spot doesn't work.

Hey, if you want to make a two immense yet separate maps, go for it. I really like the maps Derian and I made though personally. I just wish there was an easier way to update my map, say have realm/chapter leaders e-mail me, but god forbid anyone want to communicate using the Dagorhir boards.

Silly Solusar - there's an active stickied thread on that board for chapters and Mirelle's been keeping it compiled and current. So no, you don't need to do anything new, just use what's there.

As for my suggestion, it needn't be two maps, it could be one with different filters. Honestly, looking at your map quickly I couldn't tell what the colors mean, other than some are chapters, some are events and practices, etc. Maybe spending more time at it would make things clearer. Having never worked with Google maps, I have no idea how hard it would be to put something that explains the icons on one.
