Tiberius - the EBF have flown with their shields as checked baggage many a time and from what they told me they never have had problems with it.
But, looking at your shield, it may go over the size limits and be treated as an "oversized bag". And that is pricey, no matter how light. The real answer to your question is to go to the airlines website and look up their baggage policies directly. And as I mentioned on one of the Ragnarok newbie threads, if you fly on a code-shared flight for some or all of the trip make sure you meet all of their regulations or it could cost - usually $80-100 EACH WAY.
Another option is to ship the shield via ups or fedex ground - but allow several days for that to get from Florida to Ohio (i.e. you may need to ship it this coming mon-tues for it to be there next Monday). Again, more detailed advice in those threads.
Also, feel free to PM me if you've got questions about your airlines policies. If you talk to someone at the airline about baggage and whatver, make sure you take down their name etc. if possible. Phone people and gate agents can make mistakes.
