Lupercallia 2011 (EMP)

Postby Physic » Mon Nov 29, 2010 8:13 pm

So I'm finally getting around to officially anouncing Lupercalia. It's been unofficial for quite a while now but it's time to promote...

http://www.empiremp.com/lupercalia.html

So far the flyer text is the same as last year and is all correct but we have some additional info:

Site opens Friday morning, though out of towners who RSVP are welcome to come early for tent camping. Friday will be classes all day. We will have introduction to EMP fighting, myths and realities of the arena, history of Lupercalia, and perhaps best of all a weapons making class by the best in the field. If you want to make a really cool weapon contact me ahead of time about materials and time.

Last year was a huge success and this year promises to be bigger. As Florida's first ever EMP event last year we had a good number of fighters but also a lot of hesitant onlookers not sure what to expect but I think every single fighter in attendence said "next year I'll fight".

If you've never seen this kind of fighting, it's worth a trip. If you want to do this sort of fighting, this may be your only chance in the Southest for another year. If you just want an old-school FUN medievalist event where everyone is there doing what they are doing because they like it instead of because they think they are supposed to or it will help them with the next merrit badge, or if you are a fan of fire, dance, or epic tales this is the place for you.

This sounds awesome. Double points for the Roman theme.

I've never heard of your group and researching the website I can't tell the construct of your weapons. It seems like full contact and real armor, so are they rattan like the SCA, blunt live steel, bel-style boffers?

It is basically full contact SCA with rattan weapons. Fights are generally to three counted blows.

My unit warranted an invite from Duke Gaston after I contacted him about cross-training, we already had a campout planned for these nights but I decided we can do our unit stuff there (general consensus permitting) - it's not even a 30 minute drive from my house. We're bringing foam weapons too.

To'Gur has a makeshift SCA kit that we're probably going to take turns in - we just have short notice and money tied up on unit equipment.

Our biggest concern is garb, we weren't planning to have it until May - armor taking the priority. So that said... we'll have a couple generi-celts, a roman, a random tribal, and some monsters. To'Gur's own words via phone conversation: "Yeah, so when I see Physic... I'm going to ask him to explain my garb (monster) so I don't look like a retard."

This looks badass though, as long as everyone agrees to move the meeting, we'll make it work. Either way, looking forward to it.

Make sure you have all you safey gear. Elbow and knee pads, gloves, cups, heavy kindey belts. Wear this **** under your garb, of course. But with some borrowed knee and elbow cops, and gorget and helmets, you'll be fine for your first time out. SCA weapons hurt, but they won't kill you. If you're wearing the minimum safety stuff under some good clothes, and you fight smart, it's very safe.
I don't wear and upper arm armor at all, most of the people around me don't either.

The pugilista vids were amazing. "Let's wear SCA gear and punch each other in the face" is the best idea I've heard in a while.

Another of the local SCA Dukes is planning a Conanesque themed event in Florida. Hopefully it will happen this year but they plan to have a pit to fight in. The event will be free but the payment will come with purchasing "gold" to pay for fighters and bet on the outcome. The pit is going to be created above ground with a wooden structure and dirt will be packed around it for spectators to stand above and watch. ; This is something that I am very excited for.
