When reading the rules discussion forum, I came across the Titanium armor thread. I won't post my opinion on it, I'm not Belegarthian.

One thing I'd like to know is whether plastic armor is really as prevalent in the SCA as was stated. From everything I've read, it's something that is generally allowed for people just coming into the sport, but is highly frowned upon for any veteran to use.

I'd like this clarified by you cross-gamers out there.

It depends on the kingdom. I wear plastic armor myself, as do many people in the East. Heck, the King of the East (Icefalcon, of Icefalcon Armory) wears plastic armor.

What I can say, though, is that veterans don't wear exposed plastic armor. For example, my plastic armor is a velvet-covered corazzina, whereas Icefalcon wears a stick-jock-style plastic breastplate and arms underneath his jupon.

Many fighters who do early- or late-period kits, and thus should not be wearing a whole lot of armor, wear plastic armor underneath their fighting garb. The cooler ones get close-fitting, unobtrusive armor, but others wear pickle-barrel armor underneath huge, oversized tunics and end up looking really funny.

What he said.
Armour in the SCA is about protection while trying to keep your overall kit looking good and functional as well. Some people feel that as long as something looks good from 10’ away it’s acceptable. Also, plastic is popular because it’s affordable and often easy to make at home. Of course it’s also light and quite protective.

i use plastic knees and elbows in SCA, most of the guys i know have Plastic on them somewhere but it normally is covered. That or it looks good, plastic lamelar is really common around me and looks about the same as metal from 5 feet out. Heck even inside my helm I dont notice.

It is really common though and it is a great solution for high protection, low weight, low mass for armor. Its the best thing out there to look like you are unarmoured in SCA without actually being unarmoured(cause that is just silly)

Yeap ,What everyone already said.

I have 2 pieces of plastic in my SCA kit.

My cup and my neck piece.
Many kits That look great are covered Kydex.

Couple of bad things bout plastic.

It Insulates meaning it can be hotter than wearing metal.
The plates are thicker than a metal conterpart,so it may not move as nice as metal.
It stings when hit(like getting slapped kinda stinging) .

"Barrel" plastic. Like, from those big 55 Gal barrels you see made into dog houses or at car washes or in which pesticides sometimes come.

look aroun d industrial areas, business parks and such. na dchemical supply company has them, but if you find the end user they store them outside usually. i am not going to say it, but nighttime happens everyday.

Hey guys, sorry to raise this thread from the dead but I would hate not to weigh in on this subject.

Be careful what pickle barrels you use to make armor with. It is my understanding that the barrels are color coded based on the materials that are to be stored in them.

Blue and white, I've been told, are just fine for our purposes. However, I would be wary of using black or red barrels as I've been told they are used to hold more toxic materials.

No matter what color you chose, be sure to thoroughly wash the inside of the plates before they are to make contact with your skin.

Just my $.02

What color are they if they hold picles? And where can I steal full ones?

I don't even think you could pick up a full one :D They probably weigh more than I do.

Word on them being heavy as **** when they're full. I've used them to retain rain water ~ 8.3 lbs/ gal.

If you're buying your barrels brand new, this website is showing them for about $55 bucks in any number of colors under the sun. When they're new the colors don't matter (though I don't know if they're made of different materials).

If you're trying to pinch one, however, caveat emptor. No telling what's been inside.

For what it's worth, several of the people in my shire, myself included, rock black plastic japanese-style lamellar. The guy with the really nice kit has about$100 of silk cord in his, and looks like just sick nasty from about 3' away, and has rocked it for about 15 years. Nobody in their right mind fights with their armor up against their skin anyway. And anything toxic enough to actually hurt me through a sweatshirt wouldn't be stored in porous plastic. YMMV, but we're all free of cancer and extra digits.

What if my barrel was full of monkeys?
:monkey: :monkey: :monkey: :monkey: :monkey:

You can get 1/8" abs plastic(black grey or white I think) for about $50 A 4X8 sheet. You can mold it into whatever your sick little hear desires and it's always safe and new.

Hmm. Where? And is that thick enough? The barrel I've been using for my CoP is like 1/4" thick.

If you're wearing anything remotely padded under it, 1/8" is plenty thick.
If your layering it, like samurai style, it's **** awesome.
And you don't get it in barrels, you get it in sheets.

Arrakis, I found Interstate Plastics online selling extruded ABS 1/8" thick 4'X8' plates for $41.28 a sheet. Not sure on shipping cost. Heres the link, you can also price it in different sizes using their pricing calculator:

the plastic I used for my torso was 1/8" think, and was plenty enough protection, if it stings, learn to block there!
