Teach Foam Weaponry to Kids! Summer Camp Opportunities

Postby CampAugusta » Sat Mar 10, 2012 4:16 pm

This post is an effort to spread the word to a like minded community of a few employment opportunities we have with our Summer Camp program. Come spend the summer in an intentional, flat hierarchical, and consensus driven community that focuses on giving kids a unique experience away from technology, punishment/reward, and social pressure. We have over 150 activities to offer, including an extensive foam weapons armory. We teach sword fighting and quarterstaff, and also hold a "battle royale" that allows foam arrows, swords of all sizes, pikes, spears, axes, and several different shields. If you enjoy foam battles- come teach that joy to our campers!

People can have a job, a career, or a calling. Camp Augusta is looking for folks who have a calling. Work, play, learn, struggle and grow in a vibrant community this summer facilitating the growth of children, yourself and others in the community. Just because you can get a job at any camp, doesn't mean that you want a job at any camp. Camp Augusta is different than most camps because we operate on a structure of flat hierarchy, consensus and intention with every action. We also have many activities that you are unlikely to find at other camps.

About Camp Augusta:

Camp Augusta is an 80 acre, non-profit, residential summer camp located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Northern California. We are a small camp with about 50 staff and 90 campers per one or two week session. We aim to help campers develop self-confidence, independence, social skills (emotional intelligence), creativity, activity skills, environmental awareness and appreciation, friendships, and healthy living skills while having FUN in a small, tight, true community set in a beautiful forest. Kids also learn what most modern children have forgotten -- how to just play and be a kid without television, video games, the internet, canned games, or social pressure. We are a fairly rustic camp, the cabins are open air and don't have any electricity (the bathhouses do have electricity and hot water). This area gets little to no rain in the summer so, with the exception of the lodge, kitchen, office and living quarters, everything is outside. Counselors take their campers on an overnight once a week where they fall asleep looking up at the stars.

Unique amongst camps, our food philosophy focuses strongly on freshly prepared food versus heat and serve. We bake much of our own bread when possible and create most of our meals from their most basic ingredients. We strive to provide healthy, balanced, child-friendly, and great tasting food to our campers and staff. We have been working over the past couple of years to use as much organic and locally grown food as possible and would like to continue developing contacts during the coming summer.

Why Camp Augusta? Check out the following links and browse through the pages of info on our website. http://www.campaugusta.org/Staff/Experi ... ience.html http://www.campaugusta.org/Summer/CAD/cad.html

We are a small staff of about 50 that soon become family. Being such a close community, we are looking to know our potential staff as more than just a list of skills and certificates. To apply to Camp Augusta, we require no resumes or boxes to check. We ask that you take the time to look over our website in detail to see if it is the right choice for you. If you think it is, we want to know who you are and what drives you. Our initial staff application consists of six questions where we seek to know you better. The first question for example is "Who are you?" Please check out our website at http://www.campaugusta.org for the complete application process.

We have several leadership positions open at the moment:

Village Leader-
Village Leaders are the primary support system for counselors. Each village (4-5 cabins) has its own Village Leader (VL) responsible for overseeing the campers' & staff experience, mainly within village life. Village Leaders organize cabin activities, village activities and ensure that the needs of each camper and cabin are being met. During two-week sessions, they work with the Program Directors and Master of Fun and Games to manage weekend programming. VLs are dedicated to upholding Augusta's leadership benchmarks, by supporting and challenging counselors to grow and by being beacons within the camp community. Village Leaders must possess excellent communication, grammar and organizational skills. Village Leaders teach approx. one activity a day. Village Leaders are lynchpins in the community for camper/counselor/village life.

At this time, we are accepting applications only from Females who have an interest in working with our youngest girls' village, ages 8-12

Master of Operations-

The Master of Operations (MOP) is responsible for oversight and direct support with the camp kitchen, camp nurse, transportation, insurance and workers comp, risk management & risky event follow ups, program development & tracking, and other areas that may need their support. Flexibility and a keen eye to observe where support is needed most are a must. Much of their work is solitary but in a busy office with many competing demands. The role is one in which developing a strong network of communication and support amongst various roles at camp is necessary. Someone filling this role also needs to be excited about playing an integral role in programming and the campers’ experience.

Programing Assistant Director

Responsible for general oversight of areas of camp including program (including evening programs), kitchen, health center, transportation, insurance, risk management, and much more. This role requires a person of high emotional intelligence who excels in clear and honest communication. They must embody the Camp Augusta philosophies in their words and actions. Must possess extraordinary logistical skills, keen people skills, creativity, be comfortable navigating a computer, and have extensive camp experience. Experience supervising others in a non-power based environment is desired.

Arts and Crafts Director

Oversees all things crafty. They are responsible for keeping up to date on supply needs, for reviewing the engagement and effectiveness of each art activity and its lesson plan, as well as leading the way in developing new and innovated craft projects. The Arts and Crafts Director is also responsible for providing feedback to other arts instructors, for keeping our small rustic craft shack organized and for keeping all paperwork (lesson plans, tips, ordering details, etc.) up to date while teaching approximately 2 activities a day and supporting cabins with any crafty projects of their own.

Master of Fun and Games
Responsible for making wish, wonder and surprise a reality. Their main areas of responsibility include designing and organizing intricate evening programs and daily Playstations (Augusta’s version of camper’s choice). The limits of what the MF&G can accomplish has yet to be seen! This role requires excellent people and group management skills, an organizational and critical mind, as well as extreme creativity. The MF&G will teach activities occasionally and may be asked to be a cabin counselor at times throughout the summer. See http://www.greatcampprograms.com and http://www.natureswrath.net

Counselor
Discover the wish, wonder, and surprise of living with five campers in a cabin in the woods for the summer. Learn more than you ever thought you would about relating to children in a manner that supports their growth and independence. Counselors will also serve as activity area instructors and will take lead on maintenance for a few activity areas after they’ve learnt what is needed. All counselors teach activities, but you tell us which ones you’d like to teach -- there are over 140 choices, plus your creative additions. Here’s a link to our activities page to get a taste of what we already offer:

We can teach you most activity areas, if you bring the fervent desire. And you can teach us if there are new activities that you would like to create here. Counselors are the core of camp. Most counselors spend a session or two outside of the cabin as well, focusing on program or other areas of interest.
At this time, we are looking for male counselors with an interest in working with older boys, ages 12-16.

a few other bullet points for your consideration:
• The average counselor is about 24 years old, and a few usually hold master's degrees, or are in masters programs
• Most leadership staff have 4+ years in camping, and hundreds of hours of advanced training in communication and emotional intelligence. "Conflict" is something you need to be very comfortable with (translating the concept of conflict so the conflict disappears).
• Your every waking hour is dedicated to camp, and camp life is very full.
• The pay is commensurate with experience and qualifications, plus all normal expenses covered -- food, housing, utilities, etc. Housing is rustic, to say it nicely. :-)
• Our training schedule is vast -- 100 hours before camp, 3 ½ weeks at camp (14 hour days), and close mentorship during the summer. Everyone does that, and leadership staff does more, often committing to an additional 100 hours of preparation before ever setting foot on site.
• Your general orientation is that life is an amazing and fun challenge, even when it might not seem like that so too most, and your spirits are high and consistent.
• The positions can last from April through October, but must be end of May through end of August

Yeah, I've got several years' experience teaching and working at summer programs, just not the time this summer to do it.

Honestly, I'm not sure a lot of people here have the experience/mindset for this position, but I wish you good luck in your search!
