Sparring video's

Postby Spyn » Tue Jun 17, 2008 9:29 pm

Took some video of us doing some dag / bel sparring ala sword and shield in preparation for rag. Let me know what you think. The single sword video is just a random sparring night last winter. Hope see meet a few of you at rag or oct fest.

Seems like some of the shots you guys are throwing might be a little light, but it also might just be the video. On the other hand, most of them are spot on. Very interested in fighting Amt peeps.

As I said the other day, they look pretty darn good. The shots you are throwing should work against even the largest of the shields you're likely to see at Ragnarok. There are two things I wanted to mention though, not technique-wise but in regards to the rules. One, is that Dagorhir does not allow a "magic switch," that is, if you are hit in the arm you must drop what you are holding in the arm and put it behind your back. You may not use your dead arm at all, which includes using it to assist in a shield bash or, more commonly, passing your weapon into your live hand. Two, it is not legal to hit someone in the head or neck with a shield; it may happen incidentally, in which case there's not much one can do about it, but doing it intentionally will likely result in a booking.

But the fighting is very good, I look forward to seeing you guys perform on the field.

Whoa, glad I read this.

Looks like I should take a look through the MoA before Rag.

I think you're guy's biggest problem with be flails. With that low on the shoulder round shield stance it'll take longer to pull that shield up to guard against the head wrap. But you come from a faster game :: shrug ::

Eh, they're using punch shields. Especially against most dag fighters with the flails, they'll do fine(most, not all). Flails are a lot easier to block with punch shields than strap shields.

Also, I'm just curious, what's the weight distribution like on your swords? Does it feel more like a amtgard speed bat, or like a normal beledag sword? We had some amtgard guys coming out to arnor (and to my knowledge, still do), but they were using some regular amtgard swords with 7-8 ounces of duct tape on the pommel. It was getting really annoying fighting someone that was hard to beat even with 2 edhellen longswords, when he was using 2 40 inch amtgard sticks with a bunch of duct tape in the pommel. They'd probably pass at an event, but am just curious.

And yes, most shots look to be hard enough, and it looks like you'll do really well at ragnarok.

you guys will have to seriously watch the flats, I saw flats over and over and over in that video. with a standard bel/dag weapon, swung hard, its not only illegal, you can hurt someone.

Other than that, look forward to fighting you guys at Rag.

Threw me off for a bit, too, but then I paused it and looked at the base of the striking surface and found it to be round.

I made a fresh batch of 30 swords for rag . Between those and the 5 shields should be good to go. I was fighting with round swords in most of the clips. A few of them are round swords with a striking edge under a loose cover. I made the 30 new ones all flat blades. Most are kites spar .610 , a few are rebuilt fiberglass edhellan swords. Befor i added the lead most were around 8ozs, now all are 12 +. They are weighted just above the handle .

The Amt guys should be making a good showing if that video is any indication. I love seeing more and more cross-gaming.
