Long red advice

Postby Kamai » Tue Sep 23, 2008 12:57 pm

I fight with a glaive that's just under 8ft long. What I would like, if possible, is some advice on how to fight sword boards with such a weapon. I do defintely try to keep my distance, and I try to make use of the fact it's stabbing legal, but anyone with half-a-brain realizes that they can just block the slash or stab at their legs, then rush in. I'd like advice mainly for dealing with these people one-on-one.

You're a glaiveist with the Western Uruk-Hai and you're fighting people one-on-one? What happened, did your supporting shield line die?

But seriously: Either smash their shield so hard on that first retreating blow that they can't reach you/recover in time to avoid losing their shield to your second shot, or play stab-fake-stab-fake until you take a leg or they rush you. If they do rush you, turn that eight-foot sumbitch up vertical to block shots while you draw your backup sword (you are carrying a backup stabbing blue at ~24-30 inches long, right??) and stab/wrap them with that.

And don't forget, especially when they get in close: body checking, kicking, punching, and haft smashing their shield is totally fine and can be quite effective at opening up some maneuvering room while putting an opponent off-balance.

Unlike the Eastern Orcs, the Western UH does not focus on group tactics and shield walls, but on individual ability and how to use that skill in a group environment. That said, USE A SIDEARM! Block with the glaive and use your short weapon to drop the attacer.

Since you're in the Western U-H, you should be using a buckler. Every Uruk in our army must have a sheild. You don't have to use it all the time at practice, but you must at events.
Mine is all foam and pretty big. It saves my * when I get rushed.
Just remenber the trick to using a buckler is not "trying" to block with it. Just let it sit there on your arm, it'll do it work on it's own.
The other thing you need is a quick draw sidearm. Short sword, flail, club, whatever you can get that you can draw when rushed and then put away before the next enemy come up.

To Arrakis: Well, being part of the Uruk-hai doesn't help much at home, where there is much of their presence, yet.

I've been trying the side arm, but I don't have a useful way to have it on me as of yet, so either I have something really short (18" at the most) that I can just hold in the back arm along with the glaive, or no sidearm at all. Any advice on easy ways to make a spot where such a weapon could be quickly drawn?

Fork: Thanks for the heads up. I didn't realize having a shield was necessary. Is your shield that you are talking about the one you had at chaos? That was a buckler?

Yeah, Fork is huge, that is a buckler. For side arm, I tuck the pommel through my belt sash, so all I have to do is pull the thing out the bottom of the sash. Fork has these cool omega clips he makes. The ylook like an omega symbol, all you do is attach it to your belt and your weapon handle goes right in it. Sooper easy.

I had like 4 shields at chaos.
My buckeler is about 20 inches across. A buckler is a sheild that straps to your fore arm leaving your hand free to use a weapon.
When you get rushed, drop one end of your polearm to the ground and block with the shaft. You'll have to learn to dance around it a little. While you're doing this you pull your side arm and kill the **** rushin you.
It's alittle more complicated than that, but you should get the idea.

I definitely get the idea, I just need more practice actually doing it.
Fork: FYI, I was talking about that massive thing you used with your crazy broadsword.

Haven't had the chance to fight with them yet, though I intend to go to Oktoberfest. Supposedly, V'hil said he would have no problem with us, but that's all I know.

Another method of holding a side arm.

(This requires a larger than ordinary pommel.)

Do you remember those pyramid spiked black leather bracelets that everybody and there mom owned one of circa 2001-2003?

Wear one of them attached to your belt, with the handle of your sidearm sticking through it, pommel up. If your leather snapped bracelet has been opened and closed many times, (i.e. well used) you should be able to just grab the handle and pull the sidearm out through the snaps, with a firm tug.

I have found this one to be both cheap and easy, a favorite combo of mine.
