Back shot when I Shield Bash

Postby Forkbeard » Sat Dec 06, 2008 9:46 am

Why does this always eem to happen?
I sheild bash a guy and he falls down. But, he wraps around and hits my back.
I think it's because I'm left handed. The hit always comes in on that side.
Should I change my sheild to the other side when I charge?
Because of this, I haven't ever really got into bashin people.

I don't think it's you Forkbeard, a lot of people practice that shot for just such an occasion. I know Bo was talking about it at Mux Practice last weekend, as soon as the shield hits him, he throws the wrap shot.

yea, i think it's a fairly common reaction

i guess you'd just want to extend your arm to keep your shield away from you (which might be hard while bashing)
and bash more at angles \./ versus !

I have the same problem. Occasionally I can fake a bash to draw out the wrap and then actually bash and try to pin their weapon between the shields

Fake high cross to get them to throw the shield up, then connect with the check.

That or shade enough to the opponents sword side that they cant get fully around your shield.

Keep a solid sword-block up when you bash, or try to hack their sword arm when they start the wrap.

I'm not much on Sheild bashing, but try and push their sheild into their swords way,Don't just try and knock them down make them get in their own way.

I don't have much advice cuz your a lefty, for a righty with that problem I'd say open the shield up to take the wrap and turn a little to your left, then bash with your shoulder instead of the shield. Only against other shieldman of course.

Try swinging a diagonal-down mid-torso shot on their right side while you bash.

My explanation, and this might just be specific to my realm. Typically, when someone comes in for a shield bash on me, and I know that I'm not going to be knocked down, just back, I try to use the separation created by the bash as an opportunity to swing high on the opponent's left shoulder while I'm moving backwards (I'm a righty). Using the separation is helpful for three reasons: (1) the separation occasionally takes me far enough out of range that I basically get a free hit as I go backwards, (2) people bashing have a tendency to lower their shield and tilt forward, which exposes the shoulder more than normal, and (3) people have a tendancy to expect someone hit with a bash to be stunned for a sec, and not to immediately think of attacking. Although I'm not generally wrapping after a shield bash, I think the people who are getting you with the wrap may have similar expectations.

What beats me every time is when someone knows that I'm going to attack the high left shoulder when I go backwards, and swings when I bash. These shots are always to my mid-section, and are relatively easy to pull off since I have to move and extend my body in non-normal ways to throw my shot (eg. my shield drops a little and I don't hold it flat against my body). I would think that exploiting the wrapping fighters' extension would be particularly effective for a lefty, since the lefty will be throwing where the wrapping fighter's arm was previously located. I'd recommend diagonal down, so that you could hit the wrapping arm if it hasn't yet moved out of the way.

The question is how are you bashing? A lot of people bash the other person at a upward hit kinda like a football player pushes people around. If that is the case then the person being bashed could be letting you push them up and riding your shield while hitting you over the top of your shield. I can tell you that I let people bash me all the time like that and thats what I do. Just my opion of course. The answer to that is to bash people down not up of course. If you are putting them on there butt the wrap will be much harder to get off.

Maybe I should switch hands when I bash?
And bash more Downward, of course. Thanks Morbain, I hadn't though of that.

How do you go about bashing downward? I can understand upward, just go down and then spring up, but is there a way to bash down without just jumping on someone?

I have been going over this in my mind.

And now have another point of view to offer. You are not getting hit because of the bashing itself but because you are closing distance,so they strike. The fact that you are bashing just makes it work better for them(shield isn't being used to block shots).I'm betting that their shots are starting before the bashing starts/hits.

Angle on the sheild should control your target, tilt the top towards them to start the downward motion, bottom towards to start a bit of lift, left or right to push to an edge.

You bash downward by being a 6' 8" gargantuan. Not a problem for Fork.

I'd also emphasize the importance of keeping your left hand turned outward at the wrist and ready to weapon block as your shield is focused on shoving them over. You know they want to throw that wrap, so just put your hand low, firm, and outward keeping your elbow tucked in and back. You create a vertical wall w/ your weapon on your left side protecting from hip to shoulder. Keep it there until you feel them strike your weapon.

Once their initial impulse shot is blocked, you've got everything from stomping on them for good measure (watch for crazy crotch shots from the ground) to backing up a half step and whopping easy legs outside their range from the ground. Just depends how squirrly your opponent is and how easily their morale is crushed.

ive seen you bash once or twice with your sword and board, the only advice is to put your sheild less centered and more to there sword side and push straight forward. its the same way adarian does it and it **** works like magic

Well i have done this once in a while but not often, put your shield behind you. Just like a "behind you call" where you protect you back from your * to your shoulders and just keep running and take them out with your right shoulder and chest. (are you a lefty fork? cuz if you are its different) Kinda nuts i know, it turns into a tackle not a shield bash.

This is money! Highly effective for same side swords (left on right or vice versa).
I can shoot you a link to a video that covers this defence (sans the shield bash). OR go to ESam under fighting and look for the same side sword video from Brennon.
