Books and Writings for Skill Development

Postby Physic » Sun Jan 25, 2009 8:39 pm

Someone else mentioned this and I have been wanting to bring this up for a while. Post all of your books, articles, and writings that will progress us as warriors. If you feel it has any merit to development feel free to post it.

he 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
The Tao of Jeet Kun Do by Brue Lee.
Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman
Body Mind Mastery: Creating Success in Sport and Life (Millman, Dan)
Never Gymless by Ross Enamait
The Book of 5 Rings by Miyamoto Musashi
The Art of War by Sun Tzu
Everyday Enlightenment by Dan Millman

An interesting article on muscle memory.

Aikido and the Dynamic Sphere

The Book of Martial Power
by Steven J. Pearlman (Author)

Almost all books by Loren Christensen

Books about Col. John Boyd, the "Boyd Cycle," or "OODA Loop" (sadly, Col. Boyd delivered almost all of his thought orally and didn't write much down, so we're dependent on secondary sources, sort of like Socrates and Epicurus)

"Zen in the Art of Swordsmanship" by D.T. Suzuki

The T'ai Chi Classics

The Prophet Khalil Gibran
Bruce Lee's Fighting Method Vol 2

The I33 Manuscript Companion

The Longsword of Johannes Liechtenauer, Part I

My suggestions for increasing combat skillz:

The Tao of Jeet Kun Do by Brue Lee.

At one point in his life he broke his back. During the 6 mo. convalesance he did a brain dump in short paragraphs. After his death his wife and son sorted through all of these and grouped them by category and printed the book.
There is a ton of relevant material especially the last half of the book.

Aww shucks-- Good hits, Physic. I am also a Dan Millman fan. If you liked Peaceful Warrior and dig the Socrates character check out "The Journeys of Socrates". Whether historical fiction or largely true, its the super-nuts history behind his mentor.

Some classic texts of the East:

The Book of 5 Rings by Miyamoto Musashi

The Art of War by Sun Tzu

Everyday Enlightenment by Dan Millman... Has a brief illustrated section on daily care for the body with what he calls The Peaceful Warrior Workout. It's a series of 15 streches/exercises that keep a person limber and their energy channels open. An excellent morning wake-up or pre-fight warm-up.
cat·a·lyst /ˈkætlɪst/ –noun
1. a person or thing that precipitates an event or change
2. a person whose talk, enthusiasm, or energy causes others to be more friendly, enthusiastic, or energetic.

The book is like $9.95, is still in print, you should be able to get it through just about any book sales site like amazon, or barnes and noble, etc.

is full of great little things to remember...like "He who hesitates, meditates in a horizontal position.". Very appropriate to belegarth and combat in general.

For anyone who's interested, I have Flow in Sports and it looks like it's going to be a good read, definitely worth the $12. I'll post something more once I've had some time to finish it.
