Just be sure to cover your ribs otherwise you'll feel a nice jarring pain.

After all this time that people have been talking about high crosses, it wasn't until I saw this that I really understodd what they were talking about. I fought Oldcastle style once upon a tme. Thanks for the rezz.

Thomas: That diagram is actually just showing a straight Oldecastle flat snap, if I recall correctly, but the second illustration is easily interperable as the ending position for the high cross.

The High Cross is just a Scorpion applied to the opponent's sword-side shoulder. The Short Cross is anything from a Flat Snap to the sword-side shoulder to a cross-body chop to the sword-side arm.

You are correct on the illustration but there's a move in Oldcastle that begins and ends in almost the same position: start standard Oldcastle (sword hanging down the spine), pass the sword elbow over your head and the sword itself outside the shield. End with the back of the blade smacking the opposite side of the head as a flat snap or the front of the blade smacking a hip depending on how you rotate your wrist.

If you pump the hips right, that move is faster than a scorpion/high cross and one of the reasons Oldcastle style stayed around so late out where I lived at the time. I never mastered it as the elbow on my short arms do not easily pass over my head (especially when wearing an SCA helmet).

Hello Everyone Im new to posting but always come here to read.. have been fighting for goin on 7 or 8 years now..But hello and its good to post here.. Anyways to the question...

Im having troubles.. im 5'7 - 5'8 200 lbs fight with a medium blue and a strap tear drop shield (im an athletic build always did track football etc etc) most of the people i fight are in the 6ft + range... Tho im smaller im more aggressive to compensate for this.. im great at shield kicking.. and fairly strong for my size using a lot of shield bashes kicks to the shield to position my shots... But with all the taller people I do fight.. they do have a lot of reach on me.. I can easily block the high cross all day if im playing a defensive game.....until i play the range game and try to land some offense.... shorter reach i gotta be closer... to close and they can reach right down and catch my back sometimes they are taller quick fighters as well..... A Majority of the time i stop this by catch their leg making them my size then finishing them... Is that the right strategy to use or should i lean further back with my shield (im capable of fighting both left foot and right foot forward...kicking with either foot) I cant go into a high cross battle against them their high and reach give them an advantage if i try to counter with a high cross i give up my arm to easily

.. Sorry everyone for the rambling mess.. it makes sense in my head..

Overall I Guess my questions are whats the best way for an experienced shorter fighter to counter the high cross and the over the shoulder wrap shots from taller fighters and is their any writeups on being a shorter fighter or where could i get some advice. Thanks to everyone for making sense of this mess and catch yah on the flipside..

Boz you sound like you're about my height, and controlling your range is vital. Throw some basic, safe shots while you close distance: the faster you can get in your opponent's face the better, from there something has generally opened up and you should have many opportunities for wrap shots.

If you let taller fighters control the distance, they'll move you where they want you.

As for blocking the high cross, like everyone is this thread has posted: solid weapon blocking is probably the way to go. For the shield side shoulder wrap, leaning back with a solid set point on your shield should be more than enough to compensate, if its a flail or really lanky *, you may have to move it up a few inches. If you can read it fast enough, its an easy shot to overextend on and thus pick the arm with a quick hack.

Hope this helps.

It definitly helps and appreciate the response... yea i play the range game pretty well.. and do what you have said.. just hearing that im doing it right is some nice reasurence... I guess the only problem i ever come across when im in the taller fighters face is the over the back wrap shot when he swings down and catches u in the shoulder blades or back... Any recomendations their..

Bend your knees to lower yourself just enough to throw a good hard outside leg snap. Make sure you tuck your shield up and back just a bit to compensate for your lack of height in that situation.

Or!

Drop your shield just a hair to bait that shot, then tuck up and snipe that arm.
