It has its uses, but generally isn't necessary.

I used to fight exclusively by pommels, but have moved almost entirely away from it in favor of a regular grip low on the handle and choking up from time to time.

Pommel fighting is useful in a dense, static line, to pop shoulders at maximum extension.

Pure technique, which is best practiced via 1v1 sparring, is a different creature from battlefield fighting, where any number of situations will arise, most of which cannot be practiced in sparring.

I pommel fight most of the time and i seems to work out for me. It would probably depend on whats more comfortable for you and works with how you fight.
You gotta wonder what's up with that guy..... it's like god spilled a person.

When I started, the people I fought with swore with certainty that pommel fighting was the way to go. Meh.

It increases your range and shot angles slightly, but it's slower and inferior from a defensive standpoint. As said before, in a line, I might drop to the pommel to pop a shoulder, but in a smaller sparring or skirmish situation, I rotate between a fisherman's grip and a choked up grip.

If they don't take it, then it wasn't sufficient.

Sure, give it a try. If it's something you like, do it.

You might eventually get to a point where your progress is limited by whatever choices you've made (pommel fighting, using a flail, etc) and it'll be at that point that you have to decide if improving as a fighter is more important to you than using the style/weapon combo/shot that you like.
